Where is everyone? This forum is dying on the vine. If it weren't for idiots that didn't strike lines when they shingled, or cut the corners off from the shingles in the valleys, or installed TPO instead of EPDM, or really aren't roofers because they didn't install hot mopped build-up roofs, or thought they were slaters which is a "real" roofer when they were actually just shingle roofers, we would not have anything to talk about.
There, that should do it!
It does take some time.
Most are still kicking to my knowledge. Some only post on one other forum.
You are so right: Darrel from Florida. He is briliant! Peter is from Ireland and we haven't heard from him in a few years. Boss (Sean) lives up North of Grand Rapids, Michigan as Andy said. I was at his house for a Coffee shop party about 3 years ago. It may have been longer, but time flies.
Mike, I assumed they all died as they just disappeared. My bad. Patty, glad you are back. Doc, I used to think I was pretty smart, but it turns out that not only did I not know the answers, I couldn't even understand the questions. That is humbling. I try not to judge any more. What do they say? When you point a finger at someone, three are pointing right back at you.
HA I thought you were trying to pass off as smarter then the rest of us. If I had ANY sense at all I damn sure wouldn't be doing this, would been a people Dr. or Lawyer!!!
:blush:OK, I'm sorry. I didn't think everyone would ignore me in this one. Y'all are actually a pretty well rounded and reasonably intelligent band of neanderthalls.
;)
Old School Said: A lot of them have died.
Like who?
Mosta you effin more ons is too stoopid to be rufers. (is that how ya do it) ;)
Well, OS I am flattered. Hello everyone, yes it has been awhile. Last Monday I decided to lurk again (I have for a while but I didn't belong in any of the conversations), I laughed at this topic, you can still shake it up OS, good for you. I have followed it all week. All of you have valid gripes. The old timers, the journeymen, the newbies, me a retired estimator.
Just dropping a few more names: MikeH, Bobby, Killian, Peter, the real CIAK, Egg, JayZ, others I can't come up with.
Many have come and gone and reappear. Great fun and arguements. A lot of knowledge spread around, great pictures of masterful work and of the oopsie daisies of others that you are repairing. It has been a roller coaster.
I have to go sign in on the other topic of "is there anybody out there" also "who are you voting for". I'll be saying more today than I have in a few years. OS talk to Frank he'll help you stir. PC
Well I know for me I got disillusioned for a bit. I found out after 23 yrs in your family owned business that you are 80% owner of (verbal agreement and tax returns) could be taken away from you, by an alcoholic drug addict partner. So rather then give lawyers a shi* load of money that you dont have, just swallow ALL of your pride and start over. It's been over a year and a half and it's starting to come together now, everyone said "it's for the best" I believe this to be truth. Roofers are a bunch of dumb azz'z, but for most it's all we know. If you ever get into a partnership GET IT IN WRITING!!! trust me I NEVER would have thought this could have happend. Glad I got to vent it's been a while. The Roof GURU in Fl is Darrel real nice guy I have emailed him in the past very willing to share his knowledge.
Some of us are still in the fight . . . just more pensive these days. Engage brain BEFORE opening mouth . . or typing response.
Tom Hay is still around, I heard, but frequents other forums A wealth of marketing knowledge.
Boss (Sean) is still around. He lives in my territory, so run across him occasionally at the supplier counters and out on jobs.
Missing Lefty and Dave and Mike (NZ). I believe that Dale (Darrel?) was the Florida roofing guru. A wheel chair bound business and roofing wizard. I often thought about spending a week in his presence just to soak up a small portion of his wisdom.
Business for us in West Michigan has been slowly climbing out of a hole. We had about the best year we have seen in the last 5. A few jobs carried over into this spring, something we haven't seen for quite awhile. Quote on my desk which need to get into the customer's hands.
Dealing with increased government regulation . . . did you know that by OSHA regs you cannot legally hand carry any materials or tools up a ladder?
Interesting times we live in . . . challenges and opportunities abound . . . and don't EVEN get me started on the lack of competent leadership in our state and national capitol.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms early this morning . . . in January . . . in Michigan. Mother Nature continues to work for us every day.
Tom was the guy that knew all the words to every song ever written. he did the Poly Urea spray stuff. The other guy was from Florida too, and he was older, maybe in his 70's He knew how to sell for sure. A great resourse for everyone.
Hi Old School, you thinking of tom? what about lefty and his son, andy and anita, bobby the airplane@pegboard thread :woohoo:
Twill, I guess that is about what I said. Remember Troop? How about Bull and Boss? What was the older guy from florida's name that used to talk about how to really sell? Mike from NZ hasn't been on in a while too. He was brilliant, so I hope he is just busy down there this summer (winter here) His wife posted for a while too. Where has Patty Cakes been? How many have I forgetten?
jj get some thicker skin friend. Sites like this w/ real roofers are rare on the 'net.
Canvassers and craiglisters don't stick around. We don't cut our own throats by teaching homeowners how to "roof".....or try to teach every 20 yr old canvasser how to open their own "Roofing Co"
Service Magic, Contractor LEADS, YouTube videos, .....have at it if you think it's that simple. I think ya know better :)
Not everyone is perfect. But I think what ties us all together is that we are all either in it for the long haul, or have been in it for the long haul :)
The Good Lord knows I've made major mistakes and learned way too much through the school of hard knocks. But I am not about to pass what I know onto some JackLeg cutting my throat w/ an illegal payroll doing insurance work for discounted pricing while masquerading as a "Construction Company".
Perhaps one "flaw" (I don't think so) is that in this forum: Our personalities tend to come through a bit.
Is it because we aren't simply clones (that don't even know how to price a job) hoping to get $Rich? I dunno. But it is different here. Always has been
Shaggy, do you ever watch "The Big Bang Therory"? Does the word "sarcasm" ring a bell? If you don't know, ask a question. If someone makes a snide comment, don't take it personal. For everyone that will do that, there are three that will answer if if they can. There has been about three different complete turn arounds on this forum over the last 5 years. Almost no one from then still writes or posts. A lot of them have died. I am Old School and I will post if no one else will. Just trying to stir things up.
So installing one of the best selling roofs on the market doesn't make a roofer? You know why the younger generation roofers don't know how to install BUR? Hardly anyone buys it. So I'm gonna be an expert after 3 jobs, it is what it is. I not gonna fight with anyone that's not why I came here I came to learn, but that's why me and probably others dont bother to reply. cause they get frustrated with the comments and don't talk anymore. Then you wonder where everyone went?
