CTS, it takes at least 2 five gal pails of plastic roofing cement to make you redneck roofer. Ask Tinner, he knows! There, that should get a fight going. If Jacke Legge was here, he would know that too.

If you use atleast 5 gal. of roof cement per job; you might be a redne... roofer.

If you don't know english; you might be a re.... roofer.

Hey, we forgot to include the shingle companies and the wholesale suppliers too. How about the fact that all the old Elk sningles are failing after only 25 years. No granules left at all on the south sides. What idiot came up with the idea of a "lifetime" guarantee on a 25 year laminate? No one mentioned proper soffit ventilation with a quality ridgevent system either. come on you guys. You are hardly trying.

That's them. It seems from some of the comments that GAF has solved expansion/contraction problems for all metals, and shingles too. :woohoo:

Well, on another forum, it's been explained to be that valleys need to be nailed and cleating is just plain wrong! I couldn't find any good pix I've taken showing splits in the centers and elsewhere from nailed valleys, from SS, to tin, to copper, and even Galvie. Oh, and metal doesn't get hot or cold, nor does it expand or contract under closed valleys.

What say ye?

There we go. that is stoking the fire. I forgot about gun nails. I still use a stapler when I shingle. I have won contests hand nailing too. I started out roofing with a AJC hatchet when I was about 4 and that was in 1956. Gramdpa Crookston invented the AJC (Anthony Joseph Crookston!) Anybody that hasn't heard of the AJC hatchet is a nerd too! ]

Elmo, T-locks? Good god man, they stopped making them when the quit making the 3-1's Oh they still make 3-1's. Oh well. Come on guys, bring up some more controversies.

Elmo,

You need to take a deep breath and tell us how you really feel. Trying to be diplomatic and tip toeing around to spare the feelings of the hacks is taking it's toll on your psyche.

C'mon guys, but for the substandard workmanship, my bank account would have seen about 50% less cash flow the past year or two. I have developed a keen appreciation for the hack roofers and their contribution to my financial security. That they would give so much of themselves to provide for my family is truly admirable . . . .

Sunny and 44 degrees here this afternoon. If'n all this snow melts I may have to think about loading up my nail pouch and going back to work.

I started roofing in 1976, very few air guns around then, mostly staples, and nearly everyone hand nailed. To me if you CAN NOT hand nail and only roof with a gun you ARE NOT a roofer, any imbecile with a nail gun , ladder, and a pick up truck, think they can roof! lets face it you can train a MONKEY to install shingles in the straight run. I have repaired way too many roofs where the installed by people that had NO clue how to flash corners or flash period! I remember when the term journeyman stood for something, a journeyman roofer, which are damn scarce, was capable of installing ANY type of roofing, from BUR to cedar shake and shingles to asphalt shingles( 3-tab, dimensionals, T-locks) to single ply systems. Today there are to many single phase roofers. They can only do a couple of roofing systems if they're lucky. I AM a journeyman roofer, and am Damn proud of my trade and roofs I produce! Lack of pride in craftsmanship has really given our business a black eye. http://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/rcs/users/elmo/

OThere was a fight on my crew two Fridays ago first thing in the morning. Luckily it was at the shop between brothers. They never got physical but we wouldn't let them because they wouldn't put the heavy objects down. one of them said: "fuckin let me go guys" to me and another guy restraining him. ME: "I'm not taking my hand's of this axe!"

I guess it's a fair fight if they both have weapons. Quite the exciting morning.

I hope those dudes who who make us look so good stay around forever(roofing, not talking on here). No lines, bad flashing, high/misplaced nails... oh yea and I'm tearing off a 1.5 year old EPDM roof in a couple of weeks because they ran the plywood the wrong direction.

And for the record, I consider myself a roofer and I've only done one hot roof, which was about 12 years ago. My Dad refuses to break out the kettle any more. We are shingles and modified bitumen, w/ some TPO and EPDM.
