I was wondering, what are your affiliations with roofing associations? On both the regional and national (international) levels?

Thanks Mac>>>

Exactly JET!......I used to get involved with state and regional rfg. contr. assoc's. I've sat on committees....But ya know...I just got sick and tired of the hipocrisy.....Hanging out w/turds is no good, (from a quote my dad used to tell me that goes something like; "If you keep swimming in s#!$; Some's bound to rub off on you!">>>

Jet, All organizations, of every kind, across all spectres have an inherent, self preservation focus to some degree. THe point is, the goods ones actually give you something for your membership, affilitaion etc. NRCA is one of these.

After 40 years in the contsruction industry, the last 23 in roofing, I've been a member of many trade organzations. It has been my experience that they're nothing more than "quasi-political" organizations with their only agenda being revenue generation for THEIR organization. The day of third party support has been "over" for decades. It's every man for himself now, sadly, because the old adage of strength in numbers does have merit. Save your dues money and put it into advertising for your services. The return will be much greater.

The NRCA has a wealth of very comprehensive resources available. From How to manuals to legal resources. As Tomb alludes, part of the benefit of joining is that it can help out a companys credibility (unless you do bad work, then it doesnt matter what org you Join) Point is You make your own credibilty for the most part. But, if u utilize it as a source of information, there is a lot to gain.

All org's esp those of larger size, are not going to please all their respective constituency on every point all the time, it is not plausible. But that doesnt mean throw the baby out with the bath water.

I, like MikeH, have beat the drum, (in the other direction).....Don't have much use for "org's".....Been there, done that; NRCA, WSCA, BBB's, many, many fed/state/trade orgs......IMHO there mostly about promoting credibility, (duping the uninformed), amongst themselves, and commradery/golf tournaments, etc.... I will say for the newbie, they are educational....I would reccommend trying them on for size, so-to-speak.....works for some.....>>>

Back to the subject of roofing affiliations.

If I owned a roofing company and had kids that were approaching college age, I would join all national and regional roofing organizations. Each would put your kids in the smallest pools for the scholarships they could find, making it more likely to get them. That may be a little selfish, but it's not a sure thing either.>>>

MikeH: "Of course I won't allow that one issue to be my EXCUSE for not maintaining my membership. Y'all know what they say about excuses, but in the eye of the average roofing contractor it puts a black mark on the NRCA that overshadows so much of the good they do for members and non-members alike"

well that's me! I dropped out of NRCA over the illegal immigrant thing-y. I joined MRCA and am happy, altho, I got to say, when it comes to some resurces, at least CD-Roms, and literature, NRCA has really good stuff.

However, MRCA sponsored a very good regional conference that I attended in Indy last month and the tool box talks and SHARP program is exceptional for us. I think no matter which you belong to you, if you don't use what is available, whether thru need or want, you might feel you overspent on membership.

bottom line is: Not sure I want to spend the $'s on both>>>

I certainly wasn't trying to shut down communications, just the opposite. I never considered Mac of old to be a mistake, kind of miss him is all. I just want him to not totally loose that spirit during the Year of Living Cordially. Is it so wrong that just for old times sake I want to hear, "how long you been roofing or this is kindergarten for roofers".>>>

PS: As the great grandson of Ukranian immigrants that spoke no english, who wanted to be here, stay here, and become Americans, I too admire immigrants. But I don't have room in sympathetic soul for those that want to come, reap, rape and send their spoils home, burn our flag in the streets, suck off of our welfare system, and expect our schools to teach their kids in spanish. Want to BECOME AMERICAN, you have my hand and my heart, if not - GO BACK HOME.>>>
