Old school can still put them down

Old School

I am sore as hell right now. My son helped me to strip off about 20 squares on Monday and My other son helped me finish stripping and delivered the shingles yesterday. I did all of the roofing by myself. 3 hours yesterday and 4 hours today, 32 squares down. No one handing me shingles, I laid them out and then stapled them down. Even struck the lines by myself this morning as the rain had washed everything off. Straight as an arrow too. At 59 I have to find something else to do.

I started tracking my food intake on a website my brother told me about. I lost 20#s in a hurry. The site is livestrong dot com. Its a free site. Of course they want you to pay for an upgrade but I have no need for the upgraded version.

On gable roofs, we always cut starter sets, and of course at the same time you are cutting the end sets. You don't have to recut the starters when you lay them, and the waste you have on the ends are no more than 6 inches for each shingle. On this hip roof, I cut some pieces for when I built the hips, but I also used the longer pieces when I reached the top. I delivered 43 squares plus starter and ridges and I had 1 bundle left...barely. taking that back was the easiest $28.50 I ever made. That is efficient!!

We also use a dump trailer, and it is light enough that we can normally back it right along side the building and toss the junk right into it, without having to carry it or heaven forbid, throw it on the ground and pick it up later. at the end of the day on the way home, we just dump it, push a button. That is efficient. Waste not want not and work smarter not harder. That is our motto.

How about letting all the shingles hang-over the rake edge....come back later to cut-off, only to drop to the ground....Double/triple the work! Plus wasting material!

Oh my God the guys now a days seem hell-bent on double and triple working themselves and think I am crazy and my way is slower.

Nothing on a shingle tear off brings my blood pressure up like trash hitting the ground...I can understand steep pitched roofs because sometimes it cannot be helped, but why in the chit is trash hitting the ground on a 1 layer 5/12?? They want to strip the roof and just hit the ground and clean it later....drives me batchit.

Old Rick and Joe used to basically sprint across those cupcakes with arm fulls of tear off in fear of catching a but chewing from pops...if a 1 tab hit the ground somebody better get their butts down that ladder and get that piece in the dump truck!

When pops did the walk through with the homeowner...he ran a magnet while he walked and talked...if he picked up over 10 nails with the magnet....the ride back home was not going to be enjoyable.

Old School; I don't go as far back, (late 70's),....Your a preach'n to the chior!....Like I said...It's painful to watch these guys work now-a-days....you try to help them and they absolutely will not listen to reason....Even after you physically show them!....It's not just shingling...it's everythjing....It's just the way of the times....

Humbled, I try and pick my jobs and I also know enough to have a laborer do the lifting for me. It gets heavy in a hurry anymore. I can't kneel on the roof anymore, so I scooch along on my butt and keep right on shingling. I was able to have the forklift that delivered these shingles pull around so that I didn't have to walk very far to drop them where I knew they would be needed, Sideways too, not up and down. I handled most of the shingles only two times before I grabbed them to set them and staple them down. Like I said on the other post, I am extremely efficient in my movements, and I don't like to do anything twice. I count seconds when i am roofing, because they add up to minutes and minutes to hours. It keeps it interesting.

Great looking Job OS. Yeah even for a gravy job...32sq in 7 hours is still chittin and gettin! 4 2/3 sq per hour is admirable for sure!

One of the reasons I try not to mess with shingles anymore (got 2 shingles jobs on the books right now..ugh) is because the lack of craftsmen. The good ones from my old crew I ran for my dad back in the 90s are all split up...Scott is a metal roof subcontractor, Jerry is a superintendent for a big company, Phil is a foreman for a commercial demolition crew, and I run my business which focuses heavily on the repair aspects even though I do quite a few full replacements.

Every time I hire a shingler....they are lazy, and prone to trying shortcuts and I end up running them off.

I am only 32...I know a young pup....but I learned from my dad and a lot of the old schoolers.

Glad to see someone from my dads generation who can still put em down and put em down right, nice, and neat.

My pops died in 03 but if he was still with us he would still be out running the roads and getting it done right.

Maybe tinner, but you will have to quit aging before we can do that. Don't like the sound of that!

I did the last of it today, about 12 sqaures with ridges and I had to wait for the contractor to finish a few things. It took about 3 hours to get the shingles down and trimmed, and then I just hand nailed the ridges. My knees were on fire!!! Hand nailing is relaxing to me. I was just puttsing along and it was nice out. Tonight, I came home and showered and laid down for a bit, then got up and ate and put ice on my knee. It is hell getting old!

Hats off to you Old School!!! I can appreciate what you are doing. Never did that many squares in a day. I'm pulling 57 and haven't really pounded nails for the last 10 years. I miss it but it hurts too much and I don't care any more! I was fortunate to make the transition and get myself off of the roof, but I sure do miss getting up there and putting it in automatic and just try to keep up to the old AJC. I always liked to have thw hole day to ponder the universe as the hours went by. You get to a point where you don't even have to think about what you are doing, it just flows. My new saying is: "By the time you are really good at roofing you're too old to do it!"

Seen-It-All- Good to see you back!!! Nice fish! Hope all is well.

I turned 59 in July and I am down to about 220 from 236 this past winter. My goal is to be under 200 sometime this winter. If I can get there, I know my knees will feel better. My left knee is like a very rusty hinge in that though I can make it move, it hurts like crazy to make it do so. Hey, 4+ squares per hour for over 7 hours is pretty good for any age, expecially working by yourself. I stripped off the last side today and will be shingling it tomorrow. It is about 10 squares, and it will be interesting to see how long it takes. Just a hip side that comes to a Point. I think about 10 squares. We will see.

Hay O/S I can relate to your pain, my knees and hips aint what they were either. Seems when I am out climbing on ladders to do estimates, which is about all I do anymore, I have to jumpstart each step as I ascend...lol. I am like Frank...I let the young hosses do it anymore, altho I do spend time doing repairs...pipe boots n such. I will be 58 on Oct 5, and overweight too..230 at present. There is a food gene in my pool that just won't let me push back when I should. :)
