I am restoring a 1979 Cape Dory 27' sailboat. I am replacing some of the Teakwood and all of it needs to be refinished with varnish. I am looking for a retired person who has a working knowledge of boats and varnish work to help in the restoration process. I would need them to sand, and varnish with multiple coats the entire Teakwood on this boat. Pay would be nominal but obviously the satisfaction of bringing back up a classic sailboat to where she needs to be, would be an aid in satisfaction of a job well done.
This really jerks A knot in my hind side. Someone is restoring A Teak Dory. They will have A vessel with A high cash value. They've obviously got A bit of jingle to acquire it. They want to pay A nominal wage to A retired person, which,in Florida, anyone that's retired and seeking work to get by, you're more than likely elderly. Sanding and polying teak is not A skill it is an art. They are seeking an artisan.
They can always just say "No"
I'm hoping to retire from roofing about 30 years from now. I'll travel, enjoy my family, smoke a little green now and then to keep the glaucoma at bay, and maybe help strangers with their roof for the satisfaction of a job well done. Yep, cheap labor, not just for kids and roofers any more.
I was just sitting here feeling irritated at the same thing. I have a particular set of skills that is specialized, they want the help but they don't want to pay. Different but the same. Boat Guy will get what he pays for.
