GAF true slate has anyone installed it? What do you think?>>>
They are proving it on our backs. I don't like that much....at all!>>>
On the GAF web site they say the install is with natural (not synthetic) slate from all over the world, but they also claim "geography does NOT affect the quality of slate". This statement is absolutely untrue, and any slater will tell you that. Welsh slate comes at a premium because it is better quality, Belgian slate is cheap because it is crap. Period. Just one example off the top of my head. They also say it is 16X7 with a ten inch exposure, and the key is the high fallutin' underlayment which the whole system relies on. Horses for courses of course but I would want to see it proven first. >>>
I believe GAF bought it from an outfit in Texas, (Slate 2.0).....We did a couple of projects with it 5-6 years ago.... Yes; It's a 12" pc. of slate, installed w/2'- 4" headlap....and much like a shake liner; Some type of petroleum/plastic liner and stainless steel hooks..... Never heard anything ill of the jobs we did...We tried to get it going.....Selling it to GAF was most-likely a good move.....The majority of the slate was coming from China when we used it...Not that coming from China makes it any less...all the slate was supposedly "tested" for it's particular "grades"....>>>
Be careful. I think it is Brazilian slate and the quality could be suspect. It also costs as much as real slate with real headlap. The "Tru-Slate" is attached with brackets and is single coverage. It relies on the underlayment to keep everything dry. Why take the chance? JMHO>>>
