We were working on a slate repair Friday, on a house tht was built in 1932. I has the old Johns Manville heavy asbestos slate on it and someone had a wooden ladder hooked on the ridge of the garage where some of the ridge slates are missing. I guess an old couple lived there and the husband died about 3 years ago and the wife about a year ago. A young couple bought the house and they are fixing it up to move into in a few months.
Since nothing has been done to it for years, one of the things they had to do was to get some of the large trees hanging over the roof and house cut down. One of the branches hit the roof and that is how I got to go on it. The new owner came there and he said that cleaning out the house he found some pictures inside in a box. One of the pictures showed the garage with the ladder on the roof. Same ladder as today and same place. He turned the picture over and it was dated "1972" The ladder has been there for 39 years. Should I take it down? Should I stand on it to take off some of the old ridges that we need for the repair on the house roof. Funny!
The whole inside is "dated" in a good way. They are painting in there and most of the original wall paper has been taken down. The structure is very solid, as I believe it was built in 1934 and really good carpenters were easy to get back then.
Yes, it is the old JM asbestos slate. They made them up until about the 1970's and they lasted very well. They have the multi colors and the colors have lasted very well. it still looks classy for sure. We do a lot with the natural slates, but I was impressed with everyting but the crooked lines on that one side. As to the ladder, I am leaving it there. The new owners can do whatever they want.
OS I loved the pictures, thank you. First question, did you have the opportunity to see the fireplace inside? I would bet it is as granduer as the outside. Second question..you said asbestos slate? Third...slate might of been out of line but it gives a certain character to the house, don't you think? I love the multi colors. As for the ladder, keep it there, why not. Why it was left there, who knows, apparantly low on the list of things to do. I'm glad you were able to post the pictures. PC
Hey, I think my computer is fixed. I will try and post these pictures of the house and especially the ladder.
Question to Steve, Webmaster.
I can post pictures to my files, craigslist, yahoo (with some difficulty, operator error) why is it difficult to post on here? I'm in 101 classes, so if it can be explained can it be stupideeze. Thank You PC
I hae tried 4 times to download pictures onto the web from Picasa and it won't work anymore for me. Shoot! I have a lot of neat pics too.
I'm not alone. Thank You.  PC
I wiped the pics off from the camera. Good job dumby!
I took some pics of the house and the garage with the ladder still there. I will post them tomorrow or the next day. I am geting prety good at that. Wow!
IMO...leave the ladder there. Once the work is done the new homeowner may want to plant a vine of some kind and let it become part of the garden. :) Watch your step, it might be a little weather worn. PC
