President Eisenhower`s farewell speech of 1961:
"Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea..... This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. "
I am sorry, but there are no "good" wars. The average man on the street of any country in the world doesn't hate any other "average" man in any other country. It is these "average" men and women now who go and fight and kill each other at the behest of the politicians and lawyers in all of the countries around the world, that would never think of putting themselves in harms way. They just collect and spend the money they make from the wars. War is and always has been a "RACKET"
Arm every man and woman in the world to the teeth and then mind our own business. If they come here, we will kick their asses back into the ocean. If we go over there, we deserve the same. There is no reason that we should have bases in most of the nations in the world. We should secure our own shores and mind our own business! There are no "winner" in a war from the soldiers point of view. Only losers and sorrow.
When it comes to military policy, the only voices that make sense comes from the "extreme" wings of both parties, Kucinich on the left and Ron/Rand Paul on the right.
The Obama narrative in 2008 was "we took our eye off the ball" with the Iraq war, meaning Iraq war bad, Afghan war good. Then he gets in office, continues the George Bush timeline on both wars. I agree that Iraq should have never happened, but Afghanistan should have been in and out in 3 months. Sure it would have been a mess when we left, but it will be a mess no matter when we leave.
Mike, there are still a lot of good "Americans", and they include all races, religions, and ages. They are all of the givers and producers and hard working men and women that made this country great. On the other hand, there are the "takers" and users that have been encouraged by those in power to expect the rest of us to take care of them. I am just about to the point where I don't have anything more to give.
If we as a nation humble ourselves and ask for forgiveness and throw the bums out of Washington to show that we really mean business, I am sure that the Lord above will step in and make things right. In our name however, our government has killed millions across the world and continues to every day. That has to cease, and when it does, so will most of the need to provide all of the "charity" that our government sends all over the world. Who on Gods' green earth died and left us in charge?
Old School Said: I believe that is the same Eisenhower that had 2 million German prisoners rounded up after WWII and caged them in constentina wire enclosures and starved them to death, then sent back another 2 million Russian soldiers that had defected to the Americans to certain execution by the Russians. HMMM. 4 million deaths by cold blooded murder AFTER the end of the war. And he had the balls to criticize the government that had put him into that position of power.
That is unfortunate. Particularly the russians. They'da probably made good American.
Old School Said:I believe that is the same government that executed Germans for killing a lot of Jews.
Gotta say, I think I approve of this one.
Old School Said:The same government that managed to kill about 1 million Vietnamese at the same time it killed about 60,000 of our guys, and then did the same in Iraq and Afghanistan, killing hundreds of thousands of the native peoples while only killing about 10,000 of our own.
Politics aside, I'm sure glad it was so far off a 1-1 ratio, and glad we've gotten more efficient.
Old School Said:Boy, we are sure a torchbearer for the world. I wonder why people all over the world hate the Americans?
I also suspect that we've done 10x the amount of relief/charity work than the rest of the world combined. While governments do what governments do, a very good many of the people of this great land remain a loving, giving, charitable collaboration of folk. But I fear that America has turned a corner from which it cannot return. The God that blessed this land for 200 years, has been denied by our government and by the masses. I believe that our best years are behind us.

Boy, we are sure a "torchbearer" for the world. I wonder why people all over the world hate the Americans?
