I can't remember a hump (this was 2 yrs ago). If so, like tinner said, they made it worse as it would've been pretty minor.

Same here Jim. It was my first thought. My second was "How could he have possibly thought a water-bucking hip could improve things?"

My guess is that if you re-roofed it, you'd probably need to re-install it exactly like it is or you'd risk the problem of creating a very noticeable bump in the roof.
If I were a guessing man, and I am, I'd guess that the house and garage was detached and the hip ran all the way down. Then, a homeowner got a bright idea about creating a covered walkway between the house and garage. The homeowner got some bids and chose the lower bid. The semiskilled carpenter built the roof but messed up on the ridge height or didn't know how to blend it in because the existing roof was still shingled. Then, when the roof was stripped to re-shingle the error was discovered and the "hip to nowhere" was created to hide the bump.
Just a theory....no proof offered.

A very creative idea on what to do with that extra partial bundle of ridge!
Wonder if any adjusters on a total roof loss would pay for the "extra" ridge?
