Seriously, how can they still be in business?
5 years ago the area sales rep talked me into switching to tamko. We did two jobs with the Heritage shingle and called that relationship done.
Last week I had a customer whos Son worked for a small supply house that only sells Tamko. I agreed to use the shingles for their roof. I mean heck in 5 years surely they had a better product right?
It took less than 2 bundles to see that they are still singing the same old song.
Things that I noticed. 1. 92 degree day and they had not sealed down in 8 hours. 2. Shingles not cut square. 3. 5" exposure on some...as little as 4 3/4 on others. 4. matte of shingle could be seen though the granuals on brand new shingles. After the roof was done it looked like a heard of Midgets danced all over the roof.
But hey other than all that minor stuff it seemed like a great shingles.
Actually I dont think there was one thing I like about them.
Never had a problem withTamko here in NY,But suspect it`s a difference of where you get them from,Seems the Certainteeds I saw in Indiana looked like garbage compared to ones we get here,,and The Gaf were always great here but heard people on the west coast, and other areas weren`t happy with their product in those areas
I'll say one thing for them, they will pay for warranties. They paid us for all but one of about 12 claims.
Did one roof with the Tamko Heritage and they seemed ok. Better than Timberline by far but not quite as good as Landmark or Duration.
I always liked Tamko's colors. But I swore I will never use Heritage again because it never fails- there is always 3 or 4 shingles in every bundle that stick together because the alignment in the bundle is off maybe 1/4". I would have to spend several minutes chipping of the granules that stuck. And it didn't matter whether it was hot or cold. Why can't they just make that plastic strip a little wider?
The pitiful thing is slap on artists don't care. I have seen many roofs with chunks of shingle still stuck causing a hump and the shingle not sealing.
...and we have never had a prob with the Heritage series.
Tamko is all I have used for nearly 20 yrs. Back 3 yrs ago when the tornado came thru here and tore up jack, we were doing a small church and the water checks kept gittin further and further out of line, when we got to checking the shingles, some were at least one inch shorter than the next one. We were halfway done with one side of a 30 sq job when we figgered it out. I called my supplier and informed them of the prob. We had to go ahead and finish the one side as rain was comin. Tamko paid us to strip that side and do it again. Just that one batch of shingles was messed up. About 10 yrs ago there was a prob with the colors not coming out right in the weather/woods, and Tamko paid us top dollar to redo at least 4 jobs. In that same year they had a prob with to little tar in the tar lines, we had a job that we did that was having probs with blowoffs, they promptly paid us to put the homeowner on a new roof. Most of the troubles we had back then was caused by a big labor exchange they were having because of all their employees leaving to work at a Mercedes Plant near by, and having to retrain new employees themselves. Other than these few circumstances I cain't ever recall having a prob. with them. The recent storms in Miss and Alabama did extensive damage to their plants there, and what you are seeing now may be from restart probs from them. All in all, I won't hardly use anything else, because of their warranty program, that has,(when it was a legit claim) always taken good care of us. I have dealt with GAF and OC's warranty and it sux.
Wanted to bump this up for all to see again. If a Certainteed Rep is reading this, dont laugh. Your shingles are not the quality they use to be.
You must be talking about the Frederick plant. They are the only ones to my knowledge which are 5" exposure. Joplin, Dallas, and Tuscaloosa are 5 5/8" Frederick's suuuuck. Tamko has great ice & moisture guard and I like the rapid ridge!
