So he is a slater that is trying to work in Florida? Shoot Max, he should know how much it takes to install a slate roof then and the "Going rate" is meaningless unless he has been charging less than that rate. Does he know his true costs? Just the way it was worked made me think that he hadn't a clue. I have been wrong before.

R W is a fellow roofer out of Atlanta, and has done a lot of slate and tile here. Im surprised he was not more specific since he has a lot of experience in the field. It is a different ball game in Florida. They do not want out of state roofers there so there are numerous roadblocks in place. Just because you have insurance in georgia, dont mean chit in fla.

On anyhting intricate and involved, you might have an output of only 500-700 pieces per man per day. So you factor in the number pieces per square and get your expected daily output, times your labor rate x 8 hrs, multiply that by 20-30% proffit and overhead, then take it all and multiply it by 2.

Don't forget that last times 2 part.

A lot! It depends on whether you want it done correctly or just slapped on. Correctly means proper copper valleys and flashings and copper nails to install it. It means using the right tools to install them and it also means that when you are finished the slates are not cemented in place and there is not a bunch of caulk all over the roof. It also depends on what size slates you are talking about and if they are staggered, random, graduated, and multicolored.

What you are really asking is "what does a car cost?" If you are serious, get in touch with "Real slater" down there and he will do you a great job.

If you are a slater and are asking what you should charge, then is doesn't make any difference. You are going to give it away.
