I just heard from one of my suppliers that shingle prices are going up in February by 5 to 7%. Time for the low-ballers to drop their prices again.

Unfortunately we are caught between the proverbial rock and a hard spot. I will have to pass any increased cost onto the price charged to my client. Also, I will have to shop more judiciously for the better price shingles. And if worse comes to worse, niche market such items as pressure washing of roofs, gutters, siding, decks, driveways and sidewalks. Whatever it takes to survive and I will survive because when the going gets tough, the tough get going!! I aint being run out of the business field that I have devoted over forty years to. No way, Jose. :) ;)

You can buy shingles anywhere from about 10 different companies. They are a commodity and the price is determined by supply and demand. If the price goes up too far, something else will take its place. corragated metal or thatch or spray on urethane. It happens all the time in all the different industries. How many buggie whip factories are there any more? How about corrset factories? One hour photo shops? Pay telephones?

I think it has more to do with their income -- they raise prices to make up for volume lost -- So they can afford not to layoff people or give pay cuts to top executives or cut their incentive/prefered contractor perks programs and you name it -- they are triing their hardest to keep the business operating the same although volume is down -- their only other choice is to shut down plants lay off people cut pay etc - what would you do?

Willie, the value of the dollar is dropping like a stone and they have no options. Just wait till the shat hits the fan in about 6 months. This will be the "good old days"
