I just thought to check the population of the areas I service.
It came up to near 1.5 million which is roughly 30% of the population of the state. ( 5 million )
That's one full county and 3 partial counties.
No wonder I see so many bum roof jobs.
That's a lot of houses.
I mostly work in my county, population 440,000. There's another 1.5 million over the river in Portland metro if I need it.
Because of Vancouver government over-reacting to freak storms on the '60's and eliminating spaced sheeting for shakes, there is a higher proportion of tile here than in other Portland areas, so it's a good area for my niche.
I try to do as many jobs as I can and do a great job on each and every one. Referrals and repeat clients are the creme of the crop and I do everything in my power to earn their business and keep them coming back.
I will drive up to about 40 miles and that's for a repair. I don't mind the riding time. Gets me off the roof for a little while.
350,000 homes are within the 40 mile radius.
You got me curious so I had to look that up.
Best I can figure is about 150,000 people in my core area which is basically a square with 15 mile sides. 225 square miles.
Probably another 150,000 if I made it a 20 mile square. I would figure that an average family would about be 4 people per household so I would have about 40,000 households in my core area. That keeps a lot of roofers busy.
I live in the middle of this area and am seldom more than 7 miles from home. Usually within 2 miles. I like it that way. :)
I'm at less than 100k, which means word of mouth will make you or break you.
