Well it's about a week away from November and it won't be long before roofing in the northern latitudes will come to a crawl.

It must be very different for you southern roofers. Up here the temps stay below freezing for days at a time and roofing just gets too dangerous and slow to get much done. I've worked through many a cold winter, but those days are long gone. Content to live off of what I can stock away let the crew go on unemployement. Still have a dozen jobs to get done. Hoping for another 6 weeks of good weather to fullfill all off the promises I have made.

This my favorite time of the year. Will be in deer camp in 3 weeks, back in time for Thanksgiving and then hopefully a mild winter and a break from the rat race I've been in for the last 8 months. Taking a few days off. How's the work load out there? Evereybody busy?

DOn't worry baout it Egg. Take care of your family and don't worry about somebody you never met. :) I'll muddle through if the dizzy spells don't take over. They make roofing interesting and put the excitement back intot he mundane jobs..

Frank, I'm sorry to hear you're being forced into this maelstrom and I know you are probably as tough, ornery and stubborn a candidate to beat it as anyone here. At the moment I'm helping to support my first cousin's 20 yr. old son's fight against cancer with some funding and that's about all I can afford at the moment, but I'm holding a prayer for you and if things get sorted out with Gareth I'll try to help you, too. Good luck with it.

I forgot! THanks to all who have helped, included the ones that just passed the link on. Every little thing helps, and even clients have chipped in, or passed it on. :)

Thank you all for everything, including the kind words. That helps too.

Wow! Thanks for the kind words. Unexpected to be sure. No paypal options, but some have mailed checks directly to me marked 'Medical Issues', which goes into an account set up for the purpose. At least with checks, there are no fees on either end. Just share the thing on FB and maybe some rich guy like Bloomberg will send me something to tide me over. More presurgical stuff all next week. Any point after that and I may go in. If I come through it, it'll probably be a few weeks before I can post again. We'll see. 30-40% chance I think he said.

GKRFG Said: Frank, hope all goes well. Keep us posted. Is there a way to contribute through Paypal?

Frank posted a link the other day to Go Fund Me regarding his effort to raise funds for his surgery and recovery period. I used the site and it is easy to donate and took less than a couple of minutes to do. They send you emails verifying your payment.

I've enjoyed Frank's postings over the years and have gleaned enough knowledge over this time to confidently attempt a slate roof repair if one ever came my way. This is all because of his pictures and detailed descriptions of what went wrong and how to fix it.

I've been in Frank's shoes to some degree four different times in my life and know personally that well wishes and encouragements, even though appreciated, just don't pay the bills. I encourage everybody that is a regular contributor or visitor to this site to consider helping out a fellow roofer in need. He's paid his dues so let's support him.

Sorry for being blunt but I can imagine what he's going through and things can get pretty dark when you're in pain and faced with all sorts of uncertainties.

I doubt a Sp business would sell for much. Then, if I survive, I'll have to think up a new name for the new business and I have clients going back 40+ years. In the interim, I have two business friends trying to fit my work in and take up the slack. One is from here, and 'Roofing'. The other takes on some light work.

If I can crawl to the job, I'll be working. I've done it from a wheelchair. If I die, the wife, and her/my standin can sell everything. I have no interest in lying down and resting. I intend to die on the job, not in a bed. I have to admit that the pain is so bad sometimes, I wonder about that resolution.

Frank, sorry to hear about your troubles. Them doctors can do amazing things. Dad had the quadruple bypass done about six years ago, out of the hospital in three days. Been working hard for the past five.

As far as funding, have you ever thought about selling your website/business? I wouldn't suggest that but if your really going to be laid up for 2-3 years, people with leaks can't wait that long.

I got a job set up to start tomorrow. I have to replace the valleys on this house and make odd repairs here and there. I half exoected the wires to give me a jump-start, but they didn't. Standing on an aluminum ladder wrapping wires is a nice way to relax, imho.

Now, this one made me nervous since I had to lay the extended 40 on them.

Well, the Doc told the wife on Tues. that it would be a good idea for her to have a replacement standing by. Doc said I've here well oast my expiration date. Valve has torn and the stress has now torn another valve and the muscle is stretched well past it's breaking point. Plan A is a repair and attempt to reboot. B is a tissue replacement if I don't reboot. C is an artificial valve if B doen't work. et-al, He said it we got as far as G, it woud be good if the replacemnet husband was in the waiting room with the wife.

Assuming I survive all this, the shoulder surgery will lay me up for two-three years. It sounds so bad, I joined a fundraiser and Tweet/FB it every week to help out. http://www.gofundme.com/cq84o8

Once they start on me, i have no clue how things will be. Have 5 tests to go through next week, surgery around Thanksgiving if I make it that far.

I'm still tinkering on small jobs to relax and keep the stress down, but I can't complain. The phone rings about once a week with prior and current clients calling and asking how I'm doing, so that must say something about me. These people say they never call their plumber, remodeler, etc, to see how they're doing. I feel I've had a good life and it will be whatever it will be. :)

We had a VERY slow start this year, then it turned out to be one of the best years we've ever had when considering dollars per man hour.

Then about a month ago the sales just stopped. Like that.

Still got a few to do, but would take several more for the nice days of winter. This coming week looks beautiful!
