If you are getting into the residential section, be prepare for some intense competition. There are a lot of roofers buying for the same market! $35.00 per square just to install is a fare price,(however this WILL vary from area to area), We are paying from $65.00/sq to $100.00/sq. for tear offs and reshingle jobs here. Now if you where interested in a Network marking Company to look into I suggest Conklin , I know that there are some guys on this forum who's eyes just rolled back in their heads, but Conklin is a serious company with a positive track record. Conklin Roof Coatings are mostly for commercial and low sloped buildings. The roof coatings industry is the fastest growing section in the roofing business today! Just look at all the chatter about the GREEN roofs and sustainable roof systems, black roofs are on their way out as more and more business see the advantages of coatings. I've been involved with Conklin for 5 years now and have enjoyed a 35-45% profit margins on most of the roofs we coat, it is hard to make that margin of profit with shingles, I know I have shingled since 1976, believe this I started shingle at $4.50/sq.! Been a while. http://www.rooferscoffeeshop.com/rcs/users/elmo/

---Back when I was just starting my business I used to go door to door canvassing. I averaged 1 complete residential reroof per 1 1/2 hour of canvassing. ---I would go out on Saturdays when the homeowner was home. I would choose good neighborhoods where the roofs needed replacing and it was already starting or would be starting in a few years. ---Mornings were best. I would present my business card (very low tech...nowadays a good sales brochure, etc) and suggest I would give them a free estimate as it was obvious they would be getting estimates before too long anyway (I didn't phrase it like that). ---Most would accept and I would soon be discussing options and materials. Some would sign on the spot. Others would allow me their names & numbers for follow up. ---I haven't done that for years but it worked fine then and kept me out of the bread line. Lanny

Dave you will be OK if you work it right. You may not get rich in the near future. Hang out here with some of us Old Farts. The approach to the business has changed some but the nuts , no pun intended and bolts are the same. Tom Probably more than you wanted to know. Never knew the players except for Robert Fripp. Heard a couple of songs on the radio. Not sure of the dates, but they seemed ahead of their time. Good tunes Chuck! ;)

David, are you "in the business?" or are you a roofer? Not being critical either way, but a roofing contractor is different than a roofer. You can be both, but most people aren't. If you are a "contractor" be prepared to bad mouth all of the roofers you come in contact with, but remember that since you don't do the actual work on the roof, you have no other choice. Have fun with it and good luck.

Hi Dave!

I was listening to my new King Crimson CD that my wife got me for Christmas, and surfing the 'net too.

I came across this site called Roofing.com

After perusing it for a few hrs. one day, I learned about the roofing business. Turns out it is really about canvassing! So I thought "what the heck"! I am in good health and these guys are makin BOOCKOO Bucks.

Well to make an incredible short story short........Here I am too! Already this week between New Years and Christmas, my neighbors have scooped up 11 FREE Roofs!

And I know I can get them done next month as my wife is buying me Rosetta Stone as a belated present

My only questions are this: Do I really have to pay the roofers like $35 per 100 sq ft to do a job?
