ATTENTION: Homeowners! All Roofers are not alike
What you need to know before you call any roofer
1. “Talk to me pleaseâ€. It’s irritating when you can’t speak with a real live person on the telephone. Some roofers use an answering machine to screen their calls. Then to make matters worse, you have to wait and hope that they call you back. At TTT Roofing our phones are staffed 24 hours a day so you can always talk to a live person. 24 Hour Emergency Service
2. Your time is money: most roofers won’t give you a real appointment time. They say “We’ll be there between 10 and 4â€. So you have to waste a whole day waiting. Not any more! You get a precise “Appointment Window†when you call us. You don’t waste a lot time waiting
3. The Perpetual Motion Machine. Like the hands of a grandfather clock, a lot of roofers go “back and forth, back and forthâ€, making numerous trips before they have the supplies to finish even the simplest repair. This costs you extra money and frustration. We come prepared to get the job done right without a lot of trips that slow down your project.
4. Surprise, Surprise, Surprise. Everyone likes surprises right? WRONG!! The unpleasant surprise of sticker shock is what happens when you get charged “time and material†and the roofer gets paid more the longer he takes. Only at TTT Roofing do you get Straight Forward Pricing. This shows you the exact amount before the work begins so you can decide. Our roofing experts will even show you several options so you can pick the right one for you.
5. The Concrete Guarantee. Other roofers have a “concrete guaranteeâ€- when their trucks leave your concrete driveway their guarantee expires. Not with TTT Roofing. With us, you have a 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE.
Mike H Said: Is this the old Richard Kaller organization?
No Mike that is CCN--- Certified Contractors Network
I told Richard's brother I was sorry about his death. I also told him about the times he was on here and all that everyone went through during that time. He is a contractor in the Old Philadelphia BTW
Is this the old Richard Kaller organization?
I know a guy w/ the Roof Dog logo ---- he is by GSD
There is a company here that joined RSI a year or 2 ago and they now have a new logo. I think it is goofy, but they are selling the crap out of work. They were almost around a $1.5 mil company before they joined. They were selling a lot before too, but at a lower price. So they were doing "ok" before. A real soap opera tho.
Still not sure if some of their other new ideas are from RSI, stolen, gotten off the internet or after 40 yrs. in business they are finally getting a clue.
They have a large phone book ad that bashes other roofers--- real class act there.
But let me stress, except for the cartoon character, and perhaps the wrapped trucks, I do not know the extent of the RSI influence.
I think my biggest question is: Is there a truth in advertising policy in effect @ RSI w/ all these logos, banners, marketing? When this company started advertising a stamp that stated they are "drug free and drug tested", I about fell out of my chair.
I have a couple questions For me the most important part of our business is generating quality leads. For us smaller guys say 250k - 500k a year gross we are on a limited budget i know it is easy to say spend 25k on advertisment / Marketing but that is kinda low considering the fact you dont want to keep all your eggs in one basket so it needs to spread around.
1. Considering RSI fees with a budget of 25k for the year - Do you think RSI would be able to work with and give sound Profitable advise with this limited amount? - I dont need to know how to sell for more or anything of the sort - i can close 1 out of 2-3 clients regardless for my price. I dont want any yellow page ads because their are 30+ full page ads before the 20+ half page ads Before the 10+ 1/4 Page ads that run $1000's a month to run -- I am also top on google for Minnesota roofers and countless other keywords. so the question stands would this be benificial to me and in your opinion would i see an increase in leads and the quality of leads / customers do they discuss this generating leads?
The second most important part is Hiring a good salesman and training - I have 1 good salesman but it is hard to train an old dog new tricks and at this point i most likely need a younger dog.
2. Can they give ideas on hiring where to find and how to train good salesmen do they have training classes etc...
So in conclusion i do not need to know how to sell for more --- or cut back on overhead (i run out of my home) -- or be more effiecient (i have plenty of time on my hands)-- What would be benificial is generating more leads and getting a salesman who can be trained.
Let me know Mike@Minnesotaroofing.com
To me RSI always brings up the question I have about the infomercial guys selling getrich/realestate/internet,etc., If you're really having all that much success, why are you pushing this scam so hard?
I think the very name of Roofers Success International reeks of pretentious huckster. But even that is better than the name of their plumbing unit. "One hour plumbing" conjurs up the image of a fleet of waiting plumbers ready to serve you. When in reality it means something like they will be at their apointment within an hour.
They're somewhere on the legit scale between Roof dog across America and Dial One.
Kyle, glad to have you here every once in a while.
I have no idea what it costs to join the RSI, but if it pays, then I guess it is worth it. If everyone did it though, then everyone would be on the same level and we would all be back where we are at now...I think anyway. IMO, to criticize the organization without having been in it is without a basis, who knows?
I used to think I was really hot chit, but life showed me that really I am just a warmed up turd. I am finished trying to be a "big contractor", and am happy to just go out and swing a hammer and enjoy what I do without having to worry whether everything is being done right and on time etc. Heck, I started out in this life with absolutely nothing and I still have most of it left! Might just as well die happy; whenever that event is!
You sure do have a lot of companies listed there. You must be a really "big" contractor. Just kidding!
We are all telling you more than we know. ALL of us certainly have made a lot of mistakes. That is human. My understanding is the RSI attempts to maximise your profits and minimize your mistakes...for a price or percentage as it were. If you are paying them money, it is a percentage and I am sure you can lower the percentage by increasing the amount of money you make. Is it worth it? I guess you would have to try it to find out.
Kyle obviously thinks so. Me, I am happy where I am growing and have been here for over 50 years now. I will not die rich, but I will be comfortable. (I am not a member of RSI, but am not against it either. No interest either way)
The only people who make money are the ones who "teach" others how to make money. If the stuff they are preaching works they'd be doing it themselves.
I'm going to Copy and Paste a quote .
"There is no such thing as a great talent without great will power." - Honore de Balzac .
It was on the refdesk site this morning as the quote of the day . For those keeping score . I emailed this to THE LOVELY MRS CIAK . She is extremely talented . She struggles with the tenacity to keep going when things get tough . When she runs into opposition to her talents she turns to me for advise and comfort . She is amazing . Best thing I ever did was marry her . 30yrs + of marriage she is thrilling and gorgeous .
A lot of good advise here . I'll put in my two cents . First and I mean first may seem totally disconnected to the subject is essential to any success . 1. Love your family . without this you are doomed to failure. Be passionate about what you are doing . With that be transparent . I have learned this on here and other areas of the Internet . Transparency is always there whether you know it or not . Building a business is not overnight . It takes years . It should be realized and treated like a relationship . Slowly building one moment at a time with trust ,flexibility and broad shoulders . Know you are building your personal brand TCR. Remember that when you get up in the morning all through the day till you lay your head on the pillow . Just a start . Keep it real very very real . Build your community.
Believing in yourself is the key, along with delivering the goods !!
One thing that RSI seems to do is give their members the confidence to up their prices. But if a large portion of your increase goes to pay them, you haven't gained anything. Why not research the advertising/promotion needed to develop your own brand and YOU get to keep the increase? Of course, your percentage of jobs lost to being underbid will probably increase, but the profitability of jobs you get will shoot up.
Since RSI is unknown other than to roofing contractors, it isn't their brand that the public is paying more for. There are some brands that develop enough of an identity that they seem to command top dollar. There's a window company that advertises heavily called Penguin Windows. I don't know if they're national or not. A lady my wife works with got a bid from them to replace her windows. It was $45,000. They did a real sales job on her and she really wanted them, but couldn't afford them so she had a local company do the job for $16,000. It wouldn't take getting too many of those $45,000 jobs to not feel bad about losing a few bids.
I used to sub the installation of tile roofs for the most respected remodeler around here. They have a fancy showroom and have been around since the 1940's. I charged considerably more for my labor to them than I did for my own jobs, yet the price they charged their customers was still more than double what I would have done the job for.
What I'm saying is you don't need to pay someone else to tell you to raise your prices, you can try doing that all by yourself.
RCS,and NRG are both excellent resources for the knowledge you seek,on nrg do a search on "onarooftop" topics, and you should be able to find the topic,I know onar went last year, was highly enthused, but see that this year he is selling the equipter (special dump trailer)he bought to pay for truck expenses, can`t say it`s because of economy,or that it`s because RSI didn`t give his company a boost??? I do see people formerly associated with training/seminars at RSI have moved on to other things I personally feel that all you want is available here for free, just a matter of investing your time, and being willing to learn There are many accomplished roofers/contractors at these sites that will provide answers to the questions you have,Remember sometimes learning something new is simply a matter of being able to ask the right questions, seems you`re on the right track-welcome
I would like to chime in here as well....I do not own a company, but I have created a business plan/model to compete and be successful. [ probably open for business next spring...2010]. Succsessful to me means: Running a company of 1-3 emplyees and having steady work, not looking to get rich, just make enough to live on with a little extra to put away.
One key to hiring a good roofer is to provide constant work, but at the same time you will have to hire about 5 over time to get the one good one. Heavely advertize for repairs, once the steady flow comes in shift the work load to your one roofer...it will free you up to focus on the business itself. In my area (pac NW) lots of rain which means many homes with tile need maintainence, lots of work here. Key factor for me, if there is a speciatly roof that needs repair, I have many additional numbers for roofers that can do the work (on thier day off)...build your phone book and keep them in your back pocket. You have a tear/off sheduled, reach into your back pocket and call someone.
You want to grow a little bit more, outsource your dump truck/trailer for debris hauling (this field is on fire due to all the homes foreclosed, your roofer will sub here to keep him busy. When the housing market settles down, houses will be built again, contractors will need someone to pick up the construction debris. Now you hire a second person geared more towards handling this work. Again, you will end up hiring 5 to find that one good one. If he/she is not a roofer, begin thier training.
The goal here is to to keep everyone busy...Don't send them home too often. Your business starts to slow down, keep your employees working and "YOU OUTSOURCE" yourself to other companies to make a paycheck. I have four companies that know my work very well and will use my services form time to time. I am not too proud to get back on the roof for a couple days a week.
