By now you probably know that my family are gadget inventing nuts. This is our latest device intended protect students from active shooters.

Yeah we've talked about that a lot. It's a casualty of war kinda issue. A shooter is running down the hallway with an AK47 going into each room shooting students and teacher, al la Sandy Hook. The teacher locks the door but a student who was going to the bathroom is locked out.
As hard as it sounds, better to lose 1 than 23. Most school doors lock anyway, it is just too time consuming and cumbersome to fumble for the right key and get it in the lock when gunshots are going off and there is no fine motor skills available.
A better answer is for teachers to be armed, and some are in Texas, but most schools are still resistant to that.

Pretty darn good idea! My only bit of criticism(isn't that what the internet is for?) is that it could be used to keep teachers/good guys out.
