For the past week it seems that all the adrenaline has left this site. I was going to see if I could revive it by starting a fight just for the entertainment value. My topic was going to be 'Car parks ain't roofing'. But then I remembered, Vaa's too scrappy for me to tangle with, so it will have to be up to someone else to pick it up on here.>>>

Hey Pete I had lunch a few months back with the boss Vickie . We had a conversation about your visit, She spoke very highly of you . Hang around the same banter and fighting and spitting good conversation exist. Just like the day except'in there is not a lot of PC you can express what you think. Stick around Pal . Love your input it is much needed . It looks like I'll be out west in the middle of the month will try to meet up with the Boss then . Thanks wywoody for the topic never know where or who will come out of the wood work >>>

I'm not only entertained, thanks to McRozz, I'm learning.

When I think of the contribution Vaa makes to the site, all it instills in me is respect for the guy. And I'm not even talking about his craftsmanship. I'm talking how he gives us all a view to whole nuther side of the planet. His pictures turn this into an illustrated magazine instead of a bare bulletin board. The different construction techniques they use there are of interest to all of us here. We don't thank him enough for that contribution.

But if some of us are a little lax on giving him thank you's, I understand that. I fall into that catagory. But what I have a hard time understanding is how Mike's contribution could instill one to display total contempt for his efforts. Envy? Jealousy? A feeling like the kid on the outside of the playgroup. NOW that's what I want to LEARN. So you keep hangin around here, McRozz, don't go wimping away like some NotMac.>>>

Hi Rozzi,

Reckon you don't know me and I don't know you so to you anything I say means very little if anything.

That said if I had to hand over a flat roof to anyone I know MikeNZ would be my first choice, the reason ? He is one of the few left in the roofing business who pays attention to the smallest detail.

Not only can he take constructive criticism he acts on it of course it must come from a person who is at least his equal, A Tradesman.

O.P. Have you looked at Radflex for expansion joints ?

Hi Ciak, Ed, pgriz, miscreant, it's been a while B)>>>

Ed The Roofer

This is the title of the Roofing Union that I started out in.

Local 11 Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers.

I think from that description, it is intended for any trade that keeps the water out of a structure.

Why the debate?

I am sure what passes as a proper installation in my area would not fly in some other countries.

I worked with a roofer who spent his entire life with a scratch bar, some torches, and soldering irons, a slate bar, ripper and hammer. and a small bag of hand tools....all in a small canvas bag from 1945. He wouldn't have a clue about anything we are talking about...but where he comes from nothing that we are talking about here applies to his type of work. You work with what you have available, and an experienced roofer will spend a lot of their life scratching their head trying to figure out how the previous roofer did a specific detail, and secondly, how to repair it so that it might have a little longer life until it can be replaced properly. Techniques for detail designed for climates that vary from 40 degrees to 110 degrees differ from areas that range from 30 below to 120.

if you have ever worked with Grace Ice and water shield in the summer at lunch time, then you have some idea about what torch work details can involve, and more so, what difficulty you face trying to get it right the first time, when applying details. Taking apart a messy penetration flashing can be wore time wasting than actually installing the biggest part of the area. I imagine the newer SA modifieds might present much the same opportunity to screw up some pretty basic work, using an old system. But if you haven't done it, at least give recognition to those that still do.

I know what it's like to be in a situation where, although the newer modern accessories to work with epdm, and TPO and modified might be useful, the waiting time to special order them makes keeping the roof watertight immediately, makes using them prohibitive. I'm not defending the " should have ordered it ahead of time" argument... Im just saying that...if 80 % of the roofs in your village have red tile on them, and copper flashing.....having a warehouse full of rubber is pointless, and having experienced rubber men on your payroll that don't want to do tile is a sorry position to be in.

Roofing service and waterproofing service work is a trade that, in my opinion, requires more practical knowledge than any other aspect of the industry. to be critical of the photographed image of a bad situation repaired is an unfair assessment of a person's skills, character or ability. Not too many in the industry still do it, just as most haven't the slightest idea as to what's involved in T&G roofing....other than what they've heard or read about. same for steeple jack work....minus the fear factor. >>>
