Ok, I sold two ventilation jobs both identical.
Remove 1 power fan, install a wind turbine in its place. Add two additional wind turbines and install 20 feet of cobra ridge vent on the garage which has a seperate attic space from the house attic.
I did one of them friday and the other saturday.
On the first one, I picked up the material at my regular roofing supply house. Scooped it all up and gone in 10 minutes.
Two of the turbine bases were bent a little but nothing that I couldn't straighten out. However the screws were not in the boxes on two of them so I had to go to a hardware store.
Concerning the cobra ridge vent it seems gaf has now went with a weaker nail thats attatched to the ridge vent. They bend really easy and some were already bent. So I had to deal with that.
After that day I was thinking I will find somewhere else to get wind turbines. By the time I decided to do the other job on a saturday all the regular old roofing supply houses were closed for the weekend.
So saturday morning I go to Home Depot. I need three 14 inch weathered grey wind turbines. They don't have them so I go to lowes. They don't either. I try yet another HD with the same results. So I buy the 12 inch. Some off brand called Murphy USA or some chit.
On arriving at the job and attempting to put the turbines together they scrubbed right out of the box. One had the little top piece missing and they wouldn't twist around without spraying wd40 on them. They were crap so I took them back for a refund.
I end up going to yet another Lowes and buying 12 inch Air Vent Inc. which were of a better quality but still not what I wanted. I spun them all by hand and they turned fairly well but at the end of the day after installing them on the roof they were just sitting up there not moving.
The client and I were looking around at all the neighbors turbines which were spinning. I agreed to replace them yet again if they don't turn during the heat of the day.
Just seems like the quality of everything keeps going down more and more. Because of all the BS it took 8 hours on the last job but only 5 on the first. :woohoo:
I tried to sell them both two pro 3 attic fans but many of the neighbors had already went with wind turbines and it had solved the problem with no future maintenance necessary.
They were asking specifically for wind turbines.
The intake was very good and unblocked. House and garage.
I've always let the home owner take care of the wiring or get an electrician.
Life's easier for Willie that way! ;)
The biggest hassle with power fans is putting in the electric. Since the electric was already there, it was a shame you couldn't make the power fans work. But three fans in 8 years is a homeowner that isn't keeping up with his stuff. A builder probably puts in the cheapest off brand out there, but replacements should have been quality products with at least a 10 year warranty.
A house like that really needs the fans. Maybe the intake was blocked or inadequate? causing them to burn out? Turbines are better than nothing but they aren't much better than a hole in the roof.
Putting in ridge vent after the fact is a hassle but definitely the best option over the garage as long as there is intake.
These two were 8 yr. old nice garden homes.
The house and garage attics are seperated.
3000 sq. ft main house and 750 sf garage.
There was only one 8 ft. long ridge over the house and 20 ft. over the garage which is right on the frontside.
The original builder had only one power fan installed over the house attic spaces and nothing on the garages of all of these garden homes. About 80 homes total.
There should have been two fans on the house and ridge vent on the garages.
These two home owners had replaced the fan twice already and told me they wanted something maintenance free because they were sick of it.
Thus the reason for the turbines.
Ridge vent was not an option on the main house but was definitely the best option for the garages.
egg Said: I got some decent turbines shipped from Lomanco this year.
Lomanco turbines have always been and still are the best turbine. Far superior to the others in my experience. But turbines are my last choice for proper ventilation.
Most roofers in my area have gone to the ridge vent but few are installing them correctly and even fewer are doing anything to supply the necessary eave intake ventilation.
Just take a look at the flimsy T-shirt cloth these days. (But boy are they "affordable.") Inflation is under control, but not for anything of value that you want to actually own.
I got some decent turbines shipped from Lomanco this year.
I still have a pile of old turbines that were removed over the years during tear-offs. They still turn easily and they are buffed. They were actually fabricated out of significant unstanding metal.
I cannot believe the junk they are putting out these days called leaderheads and elbows.
Pretty sad stuff.
But Willie...you need to "Educate the Customer".
Just listen to the manufacturers.... "Educate the Customer"........
