If you were sitting around with no work and you got the job for $50 sq. labor only, then congratulations on getting a new start to move forward. The guys might seem rough on you but they are just trying to teach you how to not be in this situation in the future.

To avoid this scenario in the future you might want to sit down and calculate all the costs and headaches involved in what you do, get a good idea of exactly what those are and charge accordingly. Remember that knowledge, skill, experience and time doing anything whatsoever toward a job are all worth money, not just labor. Best of wishes and Good Luck!

PS: I had another roofer tell me last week that he had bid $30 sq. on a new construction 4/12 and lost the job to a guy that bid $25. The job was 18 sq. so the owner of the property threw him under the bus for 90 dollars. Moral of the story? Target better buyers!

It's been a while since I bought a pair of shoes. Can I still get good quality work boots for $5? Or has the price gone up since 1973?

The answers are no and yes

Q: Why does the public expect roofers to give away their labor?

A: Because they do! :(

"Dad always said "Quit giving your labor away for free!" Lesson REAFFIRMED!!!"

Reaffirmed but obviously not LEARNED! Not sure who you are or where you work but it is obvious that you are not running a proper business and not understanding the costs of running a business. You are using a helper at $10 an hour and must be paying him cash. You are taking a huge gamble. What will you do if he is hurt on the job? Is he going to be insured? Do you have no business expenses? Truck, gas, insurance? Phone, liability insurance, rent, tools? The list goes on..... $40 a square might cover those expenses but that means you're still giving away tthe labor. I have to suggest that you need to start learning what running a business actually involves. ASAP. Go to the library and start reading, go online and do some research. If you want to be in business and actually make some money at it do this for your own good. I am sure there are many here who would also help but you need to learn a lot and the sooner the better.

I got it for 50 a square and will be at this guys house for a month doing other work, replacing rotten wood around house etc.....Turns out he had 20 sqs left and not 6!!! also has fascia that needs tobe replaced as I go. Got adaily rate on the wood work 300 a day for myself and a guy I pay 10 an hour.

Thanks for putting me back on track. Being on the comeback trail has put my head in my ass when pricing jobs. I have to remember how hard and how long it took me to get all of this first hand knowledge and NOT to give it away. Gotta get paid for my knowledge but not rip any eyes out. Thanks again. God has really been blessing me I am back as a roofer again. Dad always said "Quit giving your labor away for free!" Lesson REAFFIRMED!!!

On a 4:12 I would expect 6- 8sqs/man day out of the current local labor force.

DL=$35/sq.....as a legitimate contractor providing labor only - at least $75/sq.

$40/sq MORE than laminate price...maybe!

Presidentials are a pain in the rear. $40 a square is about a third of what I would probably be charging. You'd make more going to work for someone else at that rate. Give him an hourly rate and make sure you're going to make money on this job. If the homeowner is as talented as the ones I see doing their own roofs there is probably a lot of things to redo. I still love the pain too but pain doesn't pay the bills.
