Of all the luck.....

I installed a roof last year, home was built new in 1997. We tore off and installed 30 year O/C's. This morning I get a call in a big rain and the people say they have a leak...I go over and find out the leak had dripped in furnance and trashed it!! I go up on the roof to find leak and found the 5" Double wall furnance pipe flashing boot as the cause. I will post a picture later if I can figure out how to. The flashing where they make the seam had split. I looks like high wind lifted the front of the flashing and bent it just a little and caused the soldered,crimped seal to fail. I usually never replace furnance flashings unless they look rusty and weak...I may start changing them everytime now though! It wasnt the storm collar leaking, but the flashing unit itself, and it looked good when we roofed it! Any of you ever had this happen? I have never seen it happen on a newer flashing.>>>

Hey Randy: I tell or train my labour's to look at that same scenario, we look at the collars, i find that there has been allot of leaking situations after we break the seal, when your ripp'n you tend to shift the whole chimney, anyways it's something that you should pay more attention to cause it's an obstacle on the roof so it needs attention.>>>

I run into those fairly frequently. That's such a terrible way to make a vent flashing in two pieces like that. I put in an order at a sheet metal shop for the guy to make me a vent flashing one time and when i went to pick it up he had made it in two pieces and just put some white caulk around it. I could feel the blood boiling up into my face. lol I reuse the ones that are in good shape still but always put some silicone around the seam just in case. Sorry to hear about the heater. Thats messed up! :( PS I have been called to look at leaks on roofs many times and this was the problem.>>>
