Old School

Been practicing for about 3 months and I get to be on stage tomorrow for the first time. This should be fun. there are about 20 guys in the group, so I don't have to be "on" every second. If I was alone out there I would be nervous. Do--Re-Mi-Fa....

Andy, Glad to see that you sing too. "It's great to be a barbershopper" For those of you that don't know, the last song we always sing is "keep the whole world singing", and normally everyone in the audience that is or has been a barbershop singer will come on the stage and sing along. We all know that one. great fun!

I had a blast for my first show, and with 20 other guys on stage, I wasn't nervous either. You get to see and hear a lot of different levels of talent at a performance like that as we brought in two other quartets that had place nationally. Very humbling! Loads of fun too.

Thanks Lefty!

If you love what you are doing, it will bring others joy.

Woody, I really don't know enough about it, but when everyone is on, you can hear the overtones. I am going to have my wife lit in the middle tonight and see what she hears. the acoustics in the venue are really good so it will be a good test.

An unvoiced octave?

I was once told about an experiment conducted in the exploration of color theory which involved confinement of a participant in an entirely white environment. The room, the furnishings, everything visible to the observer, was pure white and there was no mirror or any other way to introduce any color to the eye. Supposedly, after a period of time under these conditions the participant began to see in full-spectrum color.

The same professor who related this had us all saturate our eyes with a specific color by staring at a slide. When we closed our eyes, the after-image was an identical square in the opposite color.

You have to hope this kind of thing doesn't happen when we go into the ballot box.

OS, you got me thinking too hard about that 5th note comment. I can see how the 4th voice is vital in changing the dynamic of the sound, changing the chord from a major to a 7th, 6th, diminished 9th or whatever. But I always thought I only was hearing four notes. After practices, when you hit the bars, at what round to you guys start hearing the 5th note? ;)

Oh, no barbers in the group. I might have my wife take a picture of me all dressed up and I can switch my picture here to that one. maybe put both of them together. that would be funny! Would the real Old School please stand up!

There are 3 different quartets in our group, but we are a chorus and that includes all of us. It is really fun to be in the middle of the group when the chords hit and overlap. 4 different notes singing all at the same time and when they combine, there is a 5th note that you can hear that no one is singing.

I just went and got my dress gear for everything. I have a Tuxedo and also a blazer outfit with the fancy shirts and vests and shoes. they go all out. I sold some ads in the program and also some tickets so I am paying my own way, but I am sure that if I had to buy everything from my own pocket, it would have been well over $1,000.00 in clothes. I hope I don't regain my weight! Ha Ha.

Good luck, break a toe (you probably need your legs for work. 20 guys in a quartette? Must be Michigan math.
