In Illinoisy you are required to be licensed and insured. If you have no employees a general liability policy is the minimum, if you have employees you need work comp. I went to quote my Drs. roof today. He had already told me that he had a quote for 6K, I already knew mine was near 9K. I knew I was wasting my time but wanted to see the other quote. It clearly stated that the contractor carried liability and that any other insurance would be covered by the homeowners regular policy. Slick way to avoid the WC issue I thought. Not legal but slick. I know the clown that runs this biz, he has told me before that his wife inherited a mill or more and that he only keeps the business going so that his sons have someting to do and to keep his other 2 guys busy. A cut up 25 square tearoff with some stick work. I have materials at @3700. So for 2300 he will keep his guys busy. We need an icon showing me banging my head against a wall.

I went to college, but I didn't become a true professional until I had been beat up a few times. I know that we all know this already, but being held responsible for our incompetence is called character, which is related to but not synonymous with professional. I like to be honored and revered in my profession (of roofing) but my professionalism requires of me that I not demand any of that. We all have to maintain a certain level of indifference to other people's opinion to be true professionals. jmho.>>>

The #1 main reason to go to college and to become a professional is to not be held liable for your incompetence. It is the "Weatherman Syndrome">>>

Ed The Roofer

He is your Doctor.

Ask him if he would suggest to any patients that they get their own Medical Malpractice Insurance rather than choosing to use a Doctor who carries that for themselves.

If you get a copy of that contract and the guy uses "Employees", then he is hiring them out as unofficial employees, or day laborers or individual subcontractors, which is in violation of the Illinois Roofing Licensing Act.
