Last summer I went to check out a repair. The lady had a raccoon try to get in by a vent and tore up some shingles. I checked out the rest of the roof and found some damaged shingles at the peak of the garage. It wasn't animal damage but I couldn't figure out what had caused it until I pulled the shingles off of the peak. I had a heck of a time pulling out one of the nails. It had melted and formed a blob at the tip of nail. I thought that was kind of amazing and since Mike taught me how to post pictures :) I had to put this on. First time I ever saw this before.

Gerry Man I wish I could post pics. I will eventually figure it out I'm certain. Was there a leak around this nail ? Living in a place that has been considered by many as the lighting capital of the world . I have seen palm trees hit with lightning and become torches as the ozone permeates the air like an oily film . A friend of mine has been hit by lighting twice . He plays on the soft ball team I used to play on . When a storm was developing everyone on the team would back as far away as possible. The Hockey Team arena was called The Thunder Dome . The team Tampa Bay Lightning ;) I'm familiar with some of the electrical effects of lightning, but not so familiar with how it affects nails melting . Ive seen where it has hit exposed stucco nails . It didn't melt the nails but blew off huge chunks of stucco + charred the lathe nails . I know it generates steam explosions when lightning strikes a tree, The energy is plowed into the wet wood then a steam explosion called "overpressure " will happen. It can and will knock you on your proverbial " arse " The overpressure can shatter windows and distort roof sheating. If the nails popped, it may have happened when the wood was suddenly flexed during an engery wave caused by " overpressure. " As far as the nail melting " i dunno " [object classid='clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000' width=320 height=280 object/][/param name='MOVIE' value='' param/][/param name='QUALITY' value='HIGH' param/][/param name='BGCOLOR' value='#ffffff' param/][/param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' param/] [/object]>>>
