Just wondering how the work situation is where you are. I am in the Chicago suburbs- far west- and I have about twice as much work booked right now than I have ever had. Getting a lot of hail work dispite not even trying to get it. And doing a lot of CertainTeed disasters.
What are you guys finding? With all of the people that come to this site we should be able to get an idea of what the economy is doing.
How goes it?
CIAK Said: Now that Ive started back into this business again. I ask my self Why are you doing this? " That's a good question especially if one has other options of making a good living.
---I am in Seattle and we are down 60% from 2008. However, we have had steady work the last 2 months and that has put us in the black for the year. Currently we have 1 reroof and about 6 one half day repairs that we have been putting off for the winter slowdown. ---My supplier is also way down. They are doing 2-5 deliveries a day when this time of year they would be doing 10-20. ---Fortunately for me I can still work on the roof when I need to. The Spring was so slow my one full time employee went to work for a friend of mine. Now we have had some big jobs and I have had to do much of the tear off & etc myself. (Took 9 1/2 tons of debris off one house alone) ---Just finished a big job and I am taking off until after Labor day. Lanny
Now that I've started back into this business again. I ask my self " Why are you doing this?" Is there a homing behavior after years of roofing? We have all heard the story about the dog ,lost a long way from their home, sometimes thousands of miles, only to show up on the front porch. The whole business is starting to crank up with phone calls from recommends. So and so told me you were very reliable and very respected could you please..............I almost forgot how to schedule appointments, more to the point tried to forget. I don't know if I will ever get this out of my system. No matter how hard I try. I'm now, consciously or subconsciously trying to work a deal going to Panama where my daughter lives part of the year. Fixing very well off "rich" peoples roofs while they are out of the country. Could this go international??? Sh@t "idunno" B)  B)
I always have a busy Fall. Most years I don't have to wait until late Summer to know it'll be busy. Things just picked up a week ago.
Slow in North Alabama.Even insurance work is hard to come by.People decide to hang on to the insurance money instead of putting the roof on.
I ate today. Actually I'm picking up some descent work the last couple of weeks. So I might make it through the winter.

I am in akron Ohio- it's very ,VERY slow here. I really don't know how the suppliers are staying afloat- I go into my usual supplier- there are 5 counter people poised wating to jump on you-almost no trucks going in or out- never more than one other customer at a time.
we had a hail storm here 3 years ago- I much prefer the current situation. I guess I am sort of semi retired- my kids are grown and largely self supporting now- and I am down to working 1-2 days a week. I would prefer working 3 days- but at least I have 1-2 days available. interestingly- virtually all the work lately has been tile and slate repairs with a little bit of interesting exterior carpentry thrown into the mix- EXACTLY what I have always preferred doing. starting to get calls from people with tile roof projects that MUST be done before winter-ones they have put off too long. I will finish up pricing out one extensive repair on Monday- I first looked at this repair 2-3 years ago-and of course by now its more extensive-and also on monday I will be meeting with a guy with a 50 square tile project- remove and relay a good bit of it and replace many valley flashings etc.
Btw- back at my suppliers- I really only see a few other contractors in buying materials-- but they are all the better outfits- I don't see much riff-raff or fly-by-nights around here now stephen
We have been working everyday. Not buried, but making a profit.
Just had my best week ever. On a roll, a good roll
