Homeless Man, Who Handed Out Resumes, Gets Hired By Roofing Company I knew I liked those guys at JB Wholesale! They are located in Southern California and I have been there many times. Good for JB and their customer Jack the Roofer for giving the guy a chance. Not a handout, an opportunity – Nice! http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012/09/06/homeless-man-who-handed-out-resumes-gets-hired-by-roofing-company/

I am gross and perverted I'm obsessed 'n deranged I have existed for years But very little has changed

I'm the tool of the Government And industry too For I am destined to rule And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious But you can't look away I make you think I'm delicious With the stuff that I say

I'm the best you can get Have you guessed me yet? I'm the slime oozin' out From your TV set......

You will obey me while I lead you And eat the garbage that I feed you Until the day that we don't need you Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you

Your mind is totally controlled It has been stuffed into my mold And you will do as you are told Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks . . .DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL!!

Well, I am the slime from your video Oozin' along on your livin' room floor I am the slime from your video

I wake from sleep and take my waking slow; learn from going where I need to go.

Good poem, the waking, it lines up with the types of poetry I enjoy. My all time favorite is Robert Frost, who's woods these are. It speaks to me on many levels.

I have found some people who work hard but not well and I have found other people who work well but not hard. I agree with the "work smart, not hard" aphorism except for the the part about not working hard. I don't want nice guys who are weak and I don't want tough guys who are mean. I've found people who are good at roofing but don't like it. I've found people who like roofing but are no good at it. Every so often there is a decent fit and once in awhile a great one. It could come from anywhere, I never know. You want someone who sees it as coming home. I could never imagine going home to my onramp. Maybe it's a high you get standing against the steady stream of people lunging into action, the wind whistling in your hair, visions of faraway places in the shimmering distance...

Sleeping under a bridge, maybe...

I'm tearing off a two-layer dome tomorrow, four months from qualifying for Medicare, waiting for some new glasses, ready to go. By tomorrow night sleeping under a bridge might sound flat-out delicious. Pleasure is pleasure. But wadoino.

I do know this: in the end it's all about being awake. I forget who said it but it went like this: I wake from sleep and take my waking slow; learn from going where I need to go. Some of us need a second chance but most of us need more.

Give a man a rod and reel and you teach a man to find a pawn shop specializing in sporting goods.

If you're hiring off the streets, almost every city has spots of (mostly hispanic here) workers willing and able to do work. Freeway rampers are specialists in the begging trade and exerting isn't their specialty.

Well said Rocky & Tico.

I won't give a man the money to buy another bottle, but I'll gladly buy him a fish and eat with him, and even more gladly put a rod & reel in his hand if he's willing to learn how to fish.

Lockheed, Boeing, Gm, GE, Microsoft and the likes of them, they need engineer type people. You won't find to many of them on the corner nor homeless. Most of those companies give in other ways. Granted, we might not agree with how they do it and alot of it might be slight of hand. We on the other hand, are the ones who are in the trenches, elbows and asses. we meet our brethern on the that corner daily and have more compassion for the individual than our corporate counterparts. I do like Mike said and hand out cards and tell them to call me. One woman sent her husband to me a few years ago. we hired him but since has moved on. Maybe another corner. Many don't won't a job, Boeing or roofing. That guy handing out his resume was the exception not the norm. I would have considering hiring him if he had approached me...... and he paased employment guidlines(e-verify)

I don't care what corporate America does to hire and keep. I'm A construction worker, I started working real young. I watched the old guys bring on winos that would panhandle by the shop to clean. Then keep them on if the wanted to work. As I got older, things went south for me. After clearing the wreckage, and going back to building, I hired them type guys from time to time. I've seen as much integrity in them as I've see from the guys with the 63' hatty, all sponsored up in marlin tournaments. Morals and values equal integrity. It is not A tangible commodity, it is an actionable expression of ones self worth displayed to others. I have some and when I get those A bit short on it, I teach. That's my responsibility to society. I owe YOU that, for one day my ex employee may be your foreman. If he is, your going to have one kind gentleman that can lead and treat you and your customer base with,,, INTEGRITY.

Alba: I agree with you. As one who has given many a chance, (but is much more picky now), I wonder sometimes where the larger community is.....

Then I realize that they have probably been there, and done that..... :)

The last church I went to was seeking Government Money for the food bank......while seeking to put up a $400,000 addition.

Perhaps another sign that the apacolypse is upon us....... Tearing down GOD's trees and putting up man's concrete.

Alba, looks like you are holding our trade in lower esteem. I would haven't even thought like that. I was just giving props to a company that was willing to give a man a chance. It doesn't matter what the company. Sheesh.
