We see a lot of ridge vent that is just installed over the plywood.
When we redo a roof, we will often times take apart the soffit and redo everything from the eave line up. New soffits and fascia, gutters, decking if needed and a ventilation system. We redo the chimneys, replace the plumbing vents and install bathroom fan vents to the outside. JUST LIKE IF IT WAS MY OWN HOUSE!!! All the time; every time. If they don't want to pay that much, there are at least 50 other contractors' out there. The soffit doesn't always have to be replaced, but for gosh sakes, when it does you have to do it right. That is criminal as far as I am concerned.
Thanks OS, I could not figure out what I was looking at.
O/S do you think these guys can afford a saw, let alone take the time to get it AND an extension cord out?

Oh, now it makes sense. The hammer marks are the hole the air has to go through. Nice work that one!
Shoddy work has always been around but the amount of insurance work created by door knockers in recent years has increased it greatly. Insurance pays the minimum they can get by with, therefore there is no money in doing things right. To make decent money with insurance it's all about production. Not quality.
Old School Said: What is that, a painted soffit vent, or a different color of paint designed to look like one?
I took the soffit vent off. It is amazing what some people who could care less will cover up when they know they can get away with it.
Nothing "free" about a "free roof" is there?
The tragedy is that I am seeing stuff like this all over the place. This particular house was built in '96 then reroofed by slop-on stormers in '03 with only 4 of these soffit vent covers and 3 turtle vents on top. It has less than 1 sq. foot of net ventilation for an attic with over 1500 sq. ft. on a 2-story.
I will be installing a power vent and adding about 20 proper soffit vents and air channels.
