Have you ever heard of tablets that melt the snow?

I am not one to give free advertising so I won't name names but they are made out of calcium chloride they come in tablets and are designed to melt the ice on your roof. Is it Safe?

I used calcium chloride and magnesium chloride for years to melt ice at my car washes. It essentially lowers, dramatically, the temperature that water can freeze.

One of them is hard on metallic parts and the other less so, I forget which.

The history of the manufacturer is interesting. Turns out the company owner, purely by chance, threw some clumps of calcium chloride on an ice dam on his roof. Noticing the effect this had (ice dam melting) he converted his equipment (used to make urinal cakes) to make calcium chloride pucks . . . only in America . . .

People are throwing them on their roofs expecting them to melt the snow and ice on their roofs but all they are doing is making more water enter their houses. The pucks are melting the snow, and the water is running down and hitting the ice dam. the ice dam is making the water go into the house, NOT off the roof.

I love seeing people use them, I know Ill have a call shortly.

Wow, you sure got that RIGHT!!! We ran across one of these situations on a double wide mobile due west of us about 7 miles last week. Neighbors were trying to be helpful . . . shoveled some snow off, then planted these in the ice dam . . . nice little round holes, pretty as you please, evenly spaced every couple of ft. And standing water at the bottom of the holes . . . and stains in the ceiling inside . . . we shoveled off the roof,cut in channels and applied some calcium chloride to the channels and dam . . . been a busy week . . .good for the bank account, though.

Calcium cloride (CaCl) is the in-bred cousin of sodium cloride {NaCl), or regular old table salt. Some rock salts have a lot of calcium in them, many do not. If memory serves me right, CaCl may continue to be effective at lower temps than NaCl, but putting it on your roof won't make your bones any stronger. IMHO, if you pay extra for a manufactured CaCl tablet, you are wasting your money.
