And now when there is real damage, whether by hail or wind, they are trying to beat the prices down to almost nothing.

Hey Gerry, I think up north here Pea sized hail qualifies for a new roof!
OTOH, almost all "hail damage" here over the last 10 yrs. has been organic shingle failure. I think I've seen 2 real hail storms
Tim, you are in a whole different world down in the south. Up north here most of the hail claims I see are total BS. We get some hail but not what I consider real damage. But I am sure there are many out there that disagree with me. That's fine but I choose not to let an insurance company dictate to me how much it costs to roof a house.
I actually used the hail tracker report below to help explain to the customer why he doesn't have enough hail for a claim. Amarillo had baseball sized hail last spring and naturally everyone in town thinks they have a new roof coming. Rather than asking him to trust me, I popped for the $30 for the report and explained that until hail gets to 1.75" there isn't likely to be damage unless there are unusual circumstances....which there sometimes are. Not in this case, though.
Thus, these reports are sometimes used to NOT file a damage claim. They are not failsafe, but they are a useful tool.

I use hail reports frequently - bought 2 of them last week. They are a useful tool to battle adjusters who're often armed with junk science as promulgated by Haag Engineering. I could go on and on about Haag, but I won't.
I have found that the adjuster is more likely to pay if I present to him a $30 Hail Watch report that says how big hail was at that specific address going back many years.
Mind you, I won't waste my time trying to make an adjuster pay for a roof that is not damaged - that is why I've lost only 1 appraisal in 34 years, and that was because I let a friend handle it for me. But if the damage is there, I want every possible arrow in my quiver to make the adjuster pay.
All of that, of course, is meant in past tense as it is no longer legal to do the above unless it is my roof.
I understand that if we have a major storm with REal roof damage that we will surely be there to assist our customers in any way that we can. When I see something like "hail reports" I get a kneejerk reaction that this is another Stormchasing thing. I will stop at that.
There are a lot more local roofers who "work hailstorms" than there are storm chasers. We don't chase hailstorms, but we do work them when they hit in our trade area. There is no logical reason not to.
If a windstorm tears off roofs in Billings Montana, and you're a roofer in Billings, Montana, you'll accept the work. If an earthquake in San Diego splits roofs, roofers in San Diego will accept the repair work.
There is nothing inherently or morally wrong about a local roofer working a hailstorm. And trust me, when Joe Blow Shoe Store gets baseball sized hail that causes 75 new roof leaks in his store over night, Joe wants roofers to gear up to do the work.
I understand completely! This company is owned by nice people that are in the postcard business, (not the hail rip-off business), that got hit by hail and were shocked at the multitude of junk mail they received so they thought they would offer a better product. Don't hold the hail thing against them they are trying to send postcards to people that really might have hail damage!
Vickie, glad to hear you approved it. I will do my best not to make any snide comments. Just can't get excited about the storm chasing business model.
I am Vickie the Boss and I approved this post.
