I believe that 9 times out of 10, the government serves the same purpose as the boy scout who helps the little old lady across the street kicking and screaming because she din't want to go across the street. The government creates 16 new problems in the process of trying to solve 1 that may have existed, but more than likely was fabricated as a means of justifying their existance or expansion. The law of unintended consequences.

When people finally wake up and realize that we live in a net world...a net world where if you weigh each problem/solution against the new problems created by seeking its solution, the problems turns out to be much less of a problem that is the solution. Then they may find that they're more of a Libertarian than they thought they were.

Roofguy SaidDoes it really matter if a roofer from Dallas installs a roof in Kansas City after a hailstorm, if he installs a good roof, that will last a long time, and he maintains it, abides by local codes and has insurance?

Roofs are not mysterious objects that require special powers to install. If they make the building watertight and last a long time, thats all they need to do. Having them installed by a local roofer is only important to the local roofer.

Tim,

Based on the ranting about me that you wrote whereas gun totin Texans don't believe in codes, I am surprised that you would make that a prerequisite of a roofer from Dallas. I'm just sitting here in Ohio all confused and scratching my bald head. Does this mean that you kinda agree with me????

Just Pokin a little fun

Ditto, Kade.

Below are photos of 2 of my brothers and me resurfacing a shingle roof in 1986...I drive by that house all the time, the roof and our resurfacing job is still there after 25 year in spite of a half dozen hailstorms. It's damaged, but the owner kept it there for whatever the reason.

My dad invented this system - fibered cutback sprayed meticulously, then ceramic granules blown in while the cutback is wet. Could do in any color you can get a shingle in since the granules are the same thing that is on a shingle. We'd even let customers custom mix the color they wanted - we'd give them baby food jars of different color granules, and tell them to play with it and then tell us the ratio they came up with. It looks exactly like a new shingle. We did them all day long on hail damaged shingles for $35/SQR and could do up to 3-4 houses in a day. Problem was, there was no room for error and very very very few people had good enough wand control to do it right.

P.S. Discovered the hard way on a roof in Spur, Texas that a 50/50 mix of red and white looks like pastel red in your hand, because you can see the different colors. But when put on the roof it is pink. After we finished my dad apologized to the owner and told him we'd redo his pink roof, but he said: "Heck no, my wife loves it, go do my garage too." lol

Part of the problem is that many of the crooked roofers, be they local or be they storm troopers, are not legitimate roofers. Because storm work can be so lucrative, it attracts charlatans who're not roofers in the technical sense, but just became roofers to make some money in storms.

One of our Kold Kingers (who is very reputable, and NOT charlatans) are New York venture capitalists...and VERY capable businessmen!!! They told me they got involved in roofing after crunching the numbers and realizing that few busineses have as much potential with so little investment as roofing.

It's not always as simple as roofers want it to be. Is a local crooked roofer any less damaging than an itinerant one? There are a lot more local roofers doing shoddy work and cheating customers than there are crooked storm troopers. Ah, but nobody wants to admit that. An inconvenient truth.

The truth is that some roofers travel to do storm work because their customers have multiple properties around the country. Some "storm troopers" set up shop in the large storms, but they use it as a means of expansion and leave a permanent location there after the storm.

Does it really matter if a roofer from Dallas installs a roof in Kansas City after a hailstorm, if he installs a good roof, that will last a long time, and he maintains it, abides by local codes and has insurance?

Roofs are not mysterious objects that require special powers to install. If they make the building watertight and last a long time, that's all they need to do. Having them installed by a local roofer is only important to the local roofer.

We're in Springtown, just west of Fort Worth, and Lubbock in West Texas. Looks like it may be a good hail season.
