I took this "Hard Targets" class yesterday in Dallas by DEVGRU operator (SEAL Team 6) Craig "Sawman" Swayer. Those guys are wired different than the rest of us. Craig has been in 55 countries, being dropped by parachute at night in full gear all over the world to kill the bad guys before they kill us.
The guy is infinitely capable, you could sense that after just 5 minutes. He does these classes all over the US (see link below) and they require no prior experience - in fact over half the people in the class had little to no gun experience. It is mostly about high level situational experience and threat avoidance. You should consider taking his class, you will walk out better prepared to protect yourself and your family.
Vaa, our founding fathers were brilliant, and prescient. They knew that at times a democratic "style" of government would be filled with corruption and at least the legitimate threat of overthrowing it would be present. Many of our framers wrote about that making comments like: The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. ---Thomas Jefferson
They wrote in our Bill of Rights that our Second Amendment was in place to protect against that. If there were no guns in civilian hands, our government would be even more out of control than it is now.
The concept is often misunderstood. It is very similar to what I studied and taught in the martial sets, and that is that strength is a great deterrent. A very capable martial artist carries himself in a way that thugs recognize and avoid - it is almost a mannerism language that both groups recognize. Gun owners, likewise, aren't looking for a gun fight. Contrarily they recognize that the best way of avoiding one is to let any would be enemy know that they'll get one.
It's all good, Woody. I don't expect SHTF anytime soon, but on a random sporadic basis, it is getting kinda crazy out there.
I always said that karate is the lifelong preparation for events that will likely never happen. It's the process that is fun.
Like Twil, I'm just teasing you, RG. When the zombies really attack I'll be at your door yelling "Tim, Tim remember that time I was nice to you."
No, really if you remember that time I was nice to you remind me so I'll have it when I need it. ;)
Having a hobby one is passionate about and derives a lot of fun and satisfaction from, is a healthy thing. Especially so when the hobby has a useful purpose. This is why karate appealed to me back in the day - unlike golf, tennis, or other hobbies which are useless when you aren't actually engaged in that activity, karate and guns/tactical training is a useful skill set that goes with you to the grocery store, the mall, to work, pretty much everywhere.
Lord knows if you get robbed by a thug with a gun, you can try to defend yourself with a pitching wedge, but I don't like your odds...
On top of all that, it can be a decent investment, or at minimum, liquidity. Unless you are an idiot, it's pretty hard to lose money on your guns. I don't sell guns, but if a guy were inclined to, and many are, and you're stable enough to ride out the bad times, there is good profit potential. I paid $700 for x number of AR15s new, and later they were selling for $2400 during the recent panic. That will happen again the next time some loon shoots up a school and slow thinkers attempt to blame it on inanimate objects.
I agree about the ridicule statement Tim. Very true. I did paintball with my son a couple of weeks and as the saying goes...... try it! You might like it.
We had a great time.
I'm all for the 2nd Amendment Tim. I read it the way the Founding Fathers meant it.
Where I diverge from most gun owners is the love of guns. Sorry, but I love women. I can't prevent people's paranoia if I do not love an inaminate object the same as them. I'm OK with it tho, because since I am Libertarian....I believe that people are free to love anyone or anything they want.
Just not in my bedroom
I have observed over the years that people tend to ridicule that which they have not invested time in. The guy who says silver and gold are a useless hedge, probably spent his money on a bass boat instead of having some gold and silver. Karate was the same. Guns and gun training is a little bit the same.
Woody, no, I spent many years in the karate business and after losing my leg, tactical stuff and guns was a natural replacement. That said, we do live in a much more dangerous country than 15 years ago! I refuse to allow myself or my family be a victim simply because we happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Guns and training is useless, right up until you need it. Then there is no substitute. Well that is not entirely true; I enjoy it as a hobby so it is not useless to me.
Secondly, Twill, you are a Libertarian if I recall. I am a border-line Libertarian, and as such I believe that the Second Amendment is critical to the protection of our other rights from a tyrannical government. Your First Amendment right means absolutely nothing if 2A isn't there to secure it.
"When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty." ---John Basil Barnhill
wywoody Said: Is life in Texas really THAT risky? Like they say, Its a whole other country.
According to my Brother near Dallas it is. But once you get past the hype and marketing, the only way he can only find Texas is on a map
I'll be the sorry one....I sleep with the doors un locked and the dog in the house.....because he barks.
But I live in a crime ridden, GOD forsaken Liberal northern state. I'm sure I will wake up dead one morning.
(just teasing ya Tim)
Is life in Texas really THAT risky? Like they say, "It's a whole other country".
I remember life a long time ago before us and the Russians armed the rest of the world and made terrorists out of other countries citizens.
Oh well, stupid me. This is all good for the economy
