So what are your thoughts on GAFElk's new warranty? All shingles are now a Limited Lifetime shingle. Any shingle installed after January 1, 2011 receives a Limited Lifetime warranty. And it looks like Malarky is matching any manufactures warranty.
Now that we have Owens Corning with their new warranty that exceeds GAFElk (which is crap if you read into into it and what they actually cover). Tamko also came out with theirs last week. Their proration starts at 15yrs into the life of the shingle. Looks like GAFElk is on the back burner in this one. Good news is that our customer will get a bit more nonproration out of their shingle for a 30yr price.
---I was told it only applies to the original homeowner by an Allied salesman. I was sent the literature but haven't read it. ---Lifetime warranties are baloney to me. It is just a sales gimic and I tell my customers that. I suggest that it may last 30 or so years and that should be plenty for most people. Tha paperwork may come in handy for someone selling their home and needing to pass inspections. Lanny
You can no longer upsell their products. They shot themselves in the foot.
It's any manufacturer's defect. Apparently IKO and another specifically say that if there is no leaks, then they aren't paying.
FL Roofer: I half way agree with you. I don't count on a warranty, especially not after 20-40 years. I've had about 10 roofs that I've applied for and have been paid for by the manufacturer(all Tamko). In fact, I've only been denied one. A couple were prorated so bad, that it was barely worth it.
Is that for leaks, or for appearance?
hatcheman is on it....the warranty was never worth a shit and it still aint.
haha kage
Had a meeting w/ GAF rep. The best thing to come out of this IMO is that they pay 100% for 10yrs instead of 5yrs. After 40yrs, they pay 20% of the shingles cost. If your certified, and register the $70 warranty, they cover 100% replacement for 50yrs.

they cover material, not labor for anyone who pays
So I wonder how code enforcement will view this change. I've read posts on here about certain areas of FL having to install 40yr+ shingles to meet code.
It will be like car dealers. You sell the product, bragging how good it is, then right when they sign up, you tell them it's crap and they need to pay more for the extended (upgraded)warranty.
If I am reading it right you have to be a Certified Contractor.
Here's a a shocker!.........it has more to do with selling the product rather than the quality of the product
I asked my rep from certainteed back when they went to the lifetime shingle just whose lifetime are they talking about. He said the shingles' lifetime of course. When they start failing then their lifetime is apparently up. He said that shingle manuf would deal w/ it later in life. I feel most of the warranty stuff is junk. jmho------------------------------------------H
Malarkeys are made in the "midwest",and have always been willing to match any warranty They still have ultra,I asked my supplier if they`re lifetime, and a half now,and he said no---
