Get some popcorn and kick your feet up and enjoy.
Old School brings up the other side of the equation. As with insurance policies you buy cheap cheap and don't get the coverage. Something happens you expect to be covered like the people who pay for the coverage. Buy cheap roofing contractors you are at a huge risk of being ripped off. Not even mentioned in report. If we were to do a roof similiar to that, I would recomend that several things happen first. Since there has been the deterioration of the shingles and the goofy venting, I would tell the people it was all or nothing. I would first tear down the chimney to the roof deck and rebuild it. Strip off the roof and dispose of the debris. Take off the bottom row of plywood, re-work the insulation and proper vents to allow an air channel into the attic. We would tear out the old wooden soffit, and install a fully vented aluminum soffit. I would close off all of the old roof louver holes, and since there is not much ridge because of the hip roof, I would install a power vent with a humidistat and Thermstat control. Replace the bottom OSB or plywood, new drip, grace up two courses new felt over the rest of the roof and 30-yr CT chingles with shadow ridges. A new chimney flashing / counterflashing system. The new chimney would have a "drip edge" at the cap to keep the water off from the brick. I would also look at the insulation in the attic with an eye towards increasing the amount if need be to bring it up to current code.
I am thinking that the buildign is about 50' long and the rafters are about 20' for a total of about 20 to 22 squares. about 3 1/2 to 4 squares of soffit to work with. Our total for all of that would be between 12,500 and 13,500 dollars.
All of our work is from referals, so I don't have to provide them, though I could if they wanted them. I write the contract up and send it to them and we get 50% down and the balance upon completion. We have our insurance agent send out the necessary certificates and we also get the building permits. All cleanup is included.
We don't do many, but that is how we roll!
We all understand what the reporter was looking for. The agenda was to provide an overview of ethical issues and considerations relevant to the use of exposure of shoddy contractors . It can be argued .The degree to which the ethical issues become problematic is in implementing exposure. It is largely dependent upon the ability of the correspondent to create a professional and objective context.I see a very biased context. Lumping every roofer in the rip off category. What is needed is a specific strategy for avoiding potential ethical conflicts in the reporting. Sensationalist journalism is not the answer. I live in a heavily regulated, licensed state. Regulations change nothing as far as rip offs go. Licensing gives more money for bureaucrats to spend. I doesn't change the moral ethical issues people on both sides of this issue have to deal with. A consumer report complaining about things only costing half as much as they should, that's a twist. I'm amazed at how cheap and consistant the bids they got were. In the final scene where they show the crew that supposedly knows what they're doing, it shows the guy nailing valley metal down right in the middle of the valley. That's something that I (and gravity) disapprove of.
Within the past week, I get a phone message from a longtime local tv newscaster. It started out with him saying his name and then something like "I'm not calling about a news story". His voice was so smooth and slick that I thought it was some kind of sales pitch and just about to delete- it when he mentioned one of my past customers referred him to me. He complained about the previous roof maintanance company he had used, twice calling them "your competitor", then the third time he says "what the heck they're -------- -- --------. I thought it was pretty funny that a wellknown person would bash a company by name on a phone message to a company he didn't know. People get real frustrated when they think they've been wronged. Ironically, the company he bashed is the only roof maintanance company that advertises bigtime on radio and tv.
