The Good, The Bad & The Ugly please.
I have not tried any yet. One friend in Michigan loves the Northgate.
I'll certainly try them on my house.....since I am fabulously wealthy. NOT! But I will give 'em a spin....it's either that or metal.
Malarkey's Windsor - I have personally witnessed enduring a significant hail storm w/o any damage.
On another note, I spose' now that the big players have jumped on the SBS bandwagon, it's gone/going the way of low-slope modified - greed takes over - Too much dirt, (clay),gets added, as most the big manuf's "impact resistant" shingles aren't so-much. We had two bad hailstorms in two years back-to-back.....Most all got a new roof each time regardless of the "impact resistant" shingles, save for Malarkey Windsors.
I like Malarkeys offerings but I haven't had any around long enough to speak for their longevity. Here is a neat video from the owner of Malarkey doing a hillbilly impact rating on his shingles.

Malarkey's Legacy is a great SBS shingle in my opinion. First rate.
Actually, though, I've become a big-time believer in cool-roof comp.
I've purchased Pabco Radiance Elite for my place. 300 lb. standard cut laminate. Obsidian. SRI number isn't too bad.
Wouldn't you know it though, they are discontinuing the heavyweight line due to lack-luster sales. Other manufacturers have come out with flimsy cheap cool-roof shingles which apparently sell better. Who would have guessed?
I put on seven sq. of HD's last week that somebody bought for himself. As a favor. Really easy. Very fast. & quite the essence of crap. Talk about false economy...
The lowest I'll go for my own stuff is CT Pro.
Celotex made a fabulous shingle they called the Ambassador. Thick tri-lam, standard cut. CT purchased Celotex and changed the Ambassador a bit. I thought it was still a stellar product and encouraged a few customers to use it. I've got a Landmark TL now that is eight years old and looks twice as old as a fifteen year old Ambassador. I say keep as much heat out of them as you can and your roof will outlast the most expensive stuff out there.
I've heard it said by people I respect that SBS doesn't hold up well against UV. Basically, though, the comparison was between SBS products and APP products. With comp you are comparing modified asphalt to standard asphalt and the crux there is that granules adhere way better to SBS shingles. With comp, granules are your friend. Lose them and it's game over.
