With things like that you have to actually make the effort to get right down and do a detailed examination. Many times I've found that the silicone and mastic were not even doing anything, just a mindless, scatter-shoot kind of blindfolded "repair" effort. Could be that there's nothing wrong with the copper. Then again, it might be beyond salvaging. Time to break out the magnifying glass if you eyes are like mine, and become one with it during the evaluation. Asphalt emulsion as a coating on raw metal would just burn out around here in no time flat.
How fragile will that copper be? it's on a solid deck-- either T&G or shiplap.
It has been caulked--- sillycone and Plastic C. I'd like to clean it up for the guy, but I don't want to cause leaks.
I might just P Wash the black off the stone, do some tuckpointing and then re-shingle the house. PLAN A

A small one upstairs, maybe one in the basement too. Not sure about the 3rd flue--- there were some valves/ pipes stuffed into one cavity that I noticed in the attic.
The curved limestone chimney is also a wall between the front door and the living room. If I go back, I'll ask to take an interior picture
