Oh yeah. I did it :)
No that is the Del Mar fair. They also have a racetrack but not while the fair is going on.
It's a beautiful facility. Right on the ocean, "Where the surf meets the turf". People actually dress up. Old Hollywood bought homes and built polo grounds nearby. Last time I went we were sitting by Jerry Bruckheimer. Imagine I could almost touch a billion dollars.
It's fun to take the train down to the races. Coming home is awful if you are not completely drunk so you don't notice the completely drunk people.
My brother was out to the San Diego Fair last year Ms Vickie. Is thst the one you refer to?
Our fairs are all going on here up and down the state. They hardly have animals anymore locally. They used to have barns and barns of every kind of livestock. It's not like the old days. The September LA County Fair is not having horse races for the first time since 1922. We used to go every year.
In the good 'ol days I would close the office down and make the entire staff go to the fair. We'd meet by the clocktower. They tore the clocktower down last year because they said it wasn't safe.
Darn it now I'm sad.
They used to say "knee high by the 4th of july" about the corn. Typical tallest corn stalk winner is 12 ft plus now....
They are all scheduled for mid summer in Indiana Mike. And it culminates with the state fair in august in indy . The fairs are 4h sponsored usually Mike. Or at least named "4h fair" In the bigger counties, like Porter, the Midways become the major attraction. We still have the animals and 4h projects, but as we have become more urbanized, entertainment has become the driving force.
I can drive a few counties away into the more rural areas and I barely see their fairgrounds. Their whole setup would fit into our parking lot. And leave room for parking at that!
That said our fairgrounds moved out of Valparaiso many years ago and is now called the Porter County Expo Center. Things are happening year aound there. Swap meets, home shows, weddings. ?.high school reunions... you name it . They've done a great job with the place
What we have from august forward are the small town festivals up until late sept early october
"County Fair Time" ???
Really?
Around our parts, the county fair is all about 4-H, agriculture and comes near the end of the harvest season.
Maybe it's just my naivety and cocoon I live in but, what in the world does your county fair revolve around this time of year?
I was on a ride at the state fair one time where the safety measures were a seat belt and a bar that pulls down. It was a fast ride that goes round and round and up and down little hills. There was a lady and a guy in another carriage beside ours. Her seat belt came loose and she slid underneath the bar and over toward the inside part of the ride. There was a large stationary bar there and large moving bars that turned the ride. One of her legs went down into all that and it made an incredibly loud snapping sound when the moving bar came around and pinched her leg against the stationary bar instantly shattering her leg bone. I've never heard anyone screaming in such agonizing pain since that night. She was rushed off to the emergency room and the ride was shut down.
