Rarely do we cut core samples on a gravel surfaced BUR, but insurance company is requiring it. Will spud edges on 12" x 12" squares and cut to deck. What would you use, utility knife, or will an 18v cordless circular saw handle the task?
Probably need to cut 4-6 samples.

Do you realize, that if you don t have the owners permission to take core samples, that you may unknowingly be buying a new roof. Of course you need samples of what is going on, but it is imperative that the owner realize the implications. When we did public work, we insisted that the roof consultant provide these tests. We just didn t do them for our own edification.

We used to do it both ways engineers reqire a 12x12 pc to check for the plys and asphalt while using a core bore you can get a rough view of the amount of plies insulation and etc. we spud a square area 16" x 6" wide then cut the plies with a knife leaving enough exposed felt on the sample and deck to install it again and reseal it with roof mastic and roof membrane then use gravel or paint for a protective coatng. I use a typical core sample cutter...aprx 2" diam hole...I always core every flat roof....Have to know what we're deal'n with....Otherwise just cut-out a section....Don't think a hole-saw will do the trick...I would think it'll gum-up immediately.
