This class action suit thing sounds like it may come to a conclusion soon. For better or worse. What a mess. I put their junk shingles on over 100 houses including my own which is shot 15 years early. I am going to mail a letter to the people who have these shingles on their house. I am no doubt going to get a lot of calls from people looking for information and help with the claim. I plan on charging $75 to take samples, pictures and help fill out the form. Maybe at that number I can at least break even for the time it is going to take. It will probably be a real pain in the ass but I don't feel right about not making people aware of the problem. I wondered if anybody else had done that or were thinking about it.

I know there was a major problem in central Pa. with the original 25 year Horizon. Cracking throughout the entire exposure surface. I think they have a lawsuit against them pending on this.

2Gen, I am in the Chicago area. They were the Custom 30's. Not an isolated batch. There must be thousands of roof and multiple thousands of squares out there. Many people have filed warranty claims but of course it is prorated and applies to the cost of shingles only. I think the class action suit was started because so many people were mad about what they were offered. I sure don't blame them but I do worry that the magnitude of this problem makes me question whether CT can absorb the hit.

Eric, I sure don't know where they went. I have seen Lefty post at NRG on rare occasion. Seems people come and go, hopefully they come back. I know I disappear for extended time on occasion but I always check in.

Hey GK,

Sucks. I'm a big fan of CertainTeed. What region do you live in? What type of shingles where they? Was this an isolated batch that was defective? How has CertainTeed been dealing with this?

Thanks for the info.

That's what I thought had happened. That is ironic. Back in the 70's, CT blew out on the glass products right after the switch-over. Now it's their organics. I love their LandMarks, truly love the re-make of the Celotex Ambassador (though not nearly as much as the Ambassador itself) love the XT's, the Presidentials. I used to be an Elk guy, but no more, especially not since GAF took them over.

Hey Gerry, do you have any idea why Lefty and Miscreant stopped showing up here?

I think most of this was in the Midwest. But this could really affect CT in a big way. There must be hundreds of thousands of squares that went bad way before their time. I still use a lot of Ct shingles. I really like the LandMarks and the XT's. But something went wrong with the organics. The same problem put Globe out of business.

I hate to hear it. I despised CT back in the 70's; now I like them again. Didn't I hear this is just re: the organic shingles or does it relate to glass matt products also? I've got one going with them, only one, related to a Celotex shingle, only CT because they bought them out. I've only had two other problems with CT and they both concerned 40 year black coloring issues. They took care of both of them with no fuss. I'm a big booster of CT right now.

Let us know how it works out -- From what i read they are responsible for materials only and just the shingles and are prorated ontop of that -- So the question is the payout of about $500 - $1000 per job - And they are still considered to perform (keep water out) so how many homeowner will actually pay the rest to replace the roof vs pocketing the money and waiitng for their roof to leak before paying again?

Like i said let me know if i am wrong and they are paying more.
