40,000 planets could be home to aliens Up to 40,000 planets could support alien life forms, scientists at the University of Edinburgh believe.

By Ben Leach Last Updated: 9:36AM GMT 05 Feb 2009

Duncan Forgan, Astrophysicist, University of Edinburgh Researchers have calculated that up to 37,964 worlds in our galaxy are hospitable enough to be home to creatures at least as intelligent as ourselves.

Astrophysicist Duncan Forgan created a computer programme that collated all the data on the 330 or so planets known to man and worked out what proportion would have conditions suitable for life.

The estimate, which took into account factors such as temperature and availability of water and minerals, was then extrapolated across the Milky Way.

Mr Forgan believes that the life forms would not be amoeba wriggling on the end of a microscope but species at least as advanced as humans.

Mr Forgan, who believes it will take 300 to 400 years for us to make contact with our neighbours, said: "I believe the estimate of 361 intelligent civilisations to be the most accurate.

"These would certainly be the most Earth-like civilisations but the bigger figures are certainly possible. We can't rule them out.

"Most of the other planets we have looked at are older than our own – so I would expect to see more advanced civilisations than ours existing."

I have a growing faith in the reality of fractals and fractal space. Earth is the center of my world, but I would never think it universally specific. It is statistically shown that not one of us billions of people alive today, no matter where we live, can go back more than one thousand years without finding a common progenitor. It would be absurd to think that this world is all there is, but to find more is only to enlarge 'this' world. Mortal flesh rebels at the notion of light-speed. I know mine does, and I even like trances.>>>

When I was around 15, a friend ans I were watching the peculiar antics of an aircraft flying along the James River. It was going kinda slow, back and forth over a 2 miles stretch. For love nor money come he come up with an explanation on why, at the end of each trip, it just headed back the other way. He wouldn't believe the weirdly lit ship was a UFO.

TO me, the convincing argument was the manner it reversed direction. No 'U' turn. No hover and maneuver to reverse direction. Just back and forth like a ball bouncing off a wall.

Mom came out the door and said all radio and TV was reporting a UFO and the AF was notified.

He still wasn't convinced when it did a bounce, reversed direction and immediately went straight up and dwindled away.

The jets flying over and hit the sound barrier didn't have a chance. Model T meets Indy car!

I was in missile command in the Army. Nothing we ever shot would have ever caught it. :)>>>
