Picked up 2 Grateful Dead CD's for my receet B-Day. Workingman's & American Beauty. This is part of my transition from cassettes to CD. I used to have both of these on a single cassette.

Anyway not a huge fan of the band. Back when I jammed a bit, "Isaac" taught me a few of their songs. We'd play them and I had never heard them. Still haven't. They did a a lot of cover versions evidently. Every cover we played, we'd have to do the Dead version of it.

Funny how that happens.

One day Isaac asked me if I'd like to go to Vermont and see a band. They were called Phish. I declined 'cuz, well....I had a job!

A few months later, I was in Charlotte, NC working Hugo, when I went and saw them, the Phish. A small club. Maybe 40 people there tops. The beer was cold and the reefer was being smoked and the band had their little trampolines. Excellent night.

A few months later back home in Indiana. Within a year the buzz was all about "Phish"! Chit they were playing the Allstate Arena! 20,000 people there maybe. But not me.....

I prefer the lighter sounds of American Beauty to the depressing theme of Workingma's Dead. These are the only Dead albums I will ever own I am sure.

ps.- "Box of Rain" such a beeyootifull song. The lyricist (Robert Hunter?) wrote for his dying father. 1st track on American Beauty

For years (decades, actually) I thought the word in the song was 'venereal'. Sure, it didn't make much sense in the sentence it was used, but most GD lyrics don't make sense, but it sure sounded more dire.

An upbeat song w/ a down theme. Kind of classic.

I had never really considered fennario, 'til now. Google it and lots of Dead stuff comes up.

Look in the online dictionary and you get...nothing

In defense of WD,where else are you going to get lyrics like;

When I awoke, that dire wolf, six hundred pounds of sin,

Was sitting at my window, so I said just come on in, Don't murder me....

Plus I hear that if you smoke enough you suddenly know what a fennario is.

I might've smoked something I dunno....where'd that picture come from? I did not put it there!

Old School

I have no idea what you are talking about Tom, but it is deep. Are you sure you didn't find a little bit of that weed somewhere?
