I just had a thought......the new OSHA Regs will force legit contractors to comply. But what about the Jacklegs? As we have seen w/ the 1099 tax cheats nothing has ever happened. Paying your taxes is a choice for some.

Anyway, the OSHA fines are steep. What will they do about Chuck in a truck who ain't got the proverbial pot to piss in? They aren't going to collect squat very easily, since Chuck ain't got squat.

(It does not seem the 1099 cheats will be able to hide behind their subs on this one. Will the IRS step in and protect them :silly: ?)

JUST MY THOUGHTS...I know enough about you guys and my boys none of you want get hurt, you all have families, children, parents. None of you want to be hurt, you can trust your senses, when things aren't right they are not right. You are not stupid, you don't want to risk your life. I know this. I wish you all well. PC

All this talk of ropes reminds me of this pic.

I have seen a crew wearing harnesses....once. We have occasionally when it is a risky job ( we will today) or for a customer that requires it.

I am wondering if the onus of this will fall back on the building owner? If Bubba ain't willing or can't even pay his OSHA fine, what is a big brother to do?

The rumor here is that a $1.5 mil a yr. roofer got squeezed for $3,200 2 weeks ago and is crying he don't have the money. Prolly not when you are giving $1.5 mil work away for $220 per sq.......

Oh where oh where are our Small Government, Less Regulation Republican HEROES ? (prolly out manufacturing safety harnesses...in China...."free" market heroes that they are)

I had a reply all ready to go about an hour ago, but a hell of a little wind storm popped up(110mph bursts not far from here) w/ some tornadic activity just now so we went to the parents house....here we go again, only shorter..

Do you guys wear ropes on 6-9/12 pitches? Do you wear them when you setup scaffolding? What are your policy's on fall protection and ropes for residential?

I don't think I've ever seen any other crew wear a harness around here, not that we ever really do.

Oh I know, but we have been a lot closer to being in compliance than most because of the acaffold we have had and used. Most of our jobs are high and steep, and that automatically brings them into compliance bacuase of it.

"...Not the 4/12 ones for sure..."

Well, then, as of this June you are no longer in compliance. I'm sure they are looking forward to the money they'll get when they fine you. They don't care a fig about what you've been doing for 25 years. Remember that old joke about the "sky hook?" Well it is no longer a joke. Then again...

We have been setting scaffold around our jobs for over 25 years now. Not the 4/12 ones for sure, but on everything high and where falling is a hazard. I saw some of the pictures of the OSHA compliance and that is what is required now. Ahead of our time I guess. Safety costs money. Scaffold on a high job takes just as much time as the ropes and other things, so there is no loss of money. Just the cost of the scaffold.
