I found this funny tonight, daughters soon to be,my new son in law (I'm getting tired of this), He is a glacier and was bitching' about a failed system.Metal roof. Following the books , doing what was asked and the system was tested today and failed. How many of you have gone through this? I know I did as an estimator. I never roofed in my life but I learned certain aspects about roofing that architects don't know. They are educated, learned people but don't have a clue. My boss & I would read prints & say what are they thinking?
I can't tell you how many times myself, and many other carpenters would have to re-engineer certain load bearings for entries, roof loads and floor. I always kept span charts for dimensional lumber.live load, dead load etc. when we made the changes i would chart it with load copies/spans/bearings, so that when some inspectors(not all,we had some who were carpenters)asked for the change reliefs I'd have them. in all actuallity,it's my responsibility to know how to pick up the ball and make the end run. otherwise every job,in reality would get held up waiting on re-engineering. my suggestion,do the work, find the info and feel good about knowing your the reason it got done in A timely manner and done right.
All the time Patty! I hate when you point something out and say what are you thinking and they come back and your the roofer just do it. I do have one architect that will call me and ask if what he is drawing will work and if not what my suggestion is so it will function with out trouble. That's a good architect!
