Seems like all roofers are so secretive that we can't seem to help each other out. Does anybody know of any affordable General Liability Companies? Ours is due soon and we are lookin' to shop around....

That bites. My dad had GL through an independent agent for 15 years and never had a claim until '09. It turns out that our policy didn't cover water intrusion! Now they are refusing to renew, which is why I'm shopping.

JSC summed it up....Back in the mid-90's when we had a full-blown shop, our GL hovered $150K to $200K....That's for "Authentic" GL....For those that play the suedo-sub game, it'a another story, and I doubt the ins is hardly worht the paper it's written on....

GL is typically based on payroll....Watch out for the "minimum premium" clauses. If your very small, the minn. prem. amount can far exceed the premium "rate" total you would anticipate. IOW's; If the minn. premium is $10,000 and the premium rate is 6%....You would have to generate at least $170,000 in payroll to justify the minn. prem.

Years ago, we got absolutely skaaay-ruude, when we, all of a sudden down-sized....I can't remember the numbers, but it was signifigant....We went from aprx. $1m in payroll, to a couple hundred thousand....We cancelled our GL policy and went w/another....Per murphy's law, for some reason I had signed our last GL renewal policy when our agent dropped in one day. I normally didn't handle that aspect, but was assured by the agent all was 'OK'....To make a long story short; We ended up paying tens of thousands of dollars to an insurance co. for nothing.

Your picking out of a basket. So many companys don't want anything to do with roofers. The liability is too high. We went through the same thing. Unfortuneatley you'll have to shop around and when you find someone willing, you will pay through the nose. Here in PA they have a state program which is awfully expensive but an alternate , an independent insurance is coming hard to find. PC Good Luck

The question can't be answered, since it varies with where you are located, type of roofing performed, limits required, gross sales, payroll, loss history, length of time in business, etc.

I've paid anywhere from $8000. to $143K minimum premium.

Get with an independent insurance broker or three who specializes in construction and see what he comes up with. And get ready for writer's cramp and archive diving.
