I am not a “women’s libber†by any means. In fact I am quite traditional in my views of what a woman's and man’s role in the household are, in most cases we are wired for those roles. There should be equality though, men and women both bring things to the party. Wait, I am dangerously veering off the point.
I worry about quotas putting women in positions that they cannot physically handle. But is there a physical reason a woman can’t be a roofer? There are a lot of women that are athletic and love being outdoors so, why aren’t more women roofers? Can’t move a bundle? Hands not strong enough to bend a metal flashing? Goodness knows it’s not that you didn’t make a girl welcome!
Is it just that a girl doesn’t want the job? I do know a few women roofers and a few that don’t roof but own the business but it’s a rare site to see a women on a roof and I have never seen a gal on a commercial job.
Hey, it’s hard work and I sure as heck don’t want any part of it. You go work hard on the roof and I will stay inside and make you a nice dinner.
hi Vickie my dad used to have a woman that did shingles barefooted, summer or winter when she got on the roof she took her shoes off, and could nail on just as many as the men.
That is funny! There are some strong women out there, and there are also come really tough women out there. It would take a Strong tough woman to do that. good for her!
While working for a company once, I was on easy duty because of a slipped disk. I was sent to do a bay window 5' up. The house had many levels, and topped out around 3 stories. To access any other area, you'd climb a roof, go down and across one, back up and down another, etc until you got to the top level. Some hike!
Well, while I'm doing the bay which is 5' from my tailgate, she asks me to look inside at an upper floor ceiling, and then the attic. She points at one thing in the attic and I show her daylight in another area!
We both make the hike to the last ridge. It's a 12/12. I slither down the far side to find 1/2 square high nailed and slid down. On the ridge, she asked what it's take to fix? I tell her "At least a couple of bundles" and start pulling things apart.( Wondering how the heck I'm supposed to get them up there with a cane in one hand!) About 10 minutes later, I hear the familiar sound of a bundle plopping on the ridge! She's not even sweating and saying "I'll be right back with anther!"
Later, at the shop, I hand the boss a check for 3-4 times what he'd proposed He's "WTF"????? I tell him the top floor needed nearly a square of repairs. He's looking at me humped over by the door and asks "HTF you do that and get the shingles on the roof with a 5' step-ladder"? :woohoo:
I very nonchalantly just said "Mrs. xx carried them for me."
He pulled hair from his head then! :woohoo: " We don't get the HO's to do our work!!!!!!!!" :woohoo:
The look on his face was priceless. He's still leary when he subs work to me.
Hey, it is hard work and in a lot of the countries overseas, the women do a lot of the hard work. It takes a certain amount of strength, but a lot of the lifting is now done with machines. On detail work, I am sure the girls would be better than some of the men. I have had a few women work for me but not many have applied. Don't know why.

Surely a lot of women would be better than some of the men out there.
It's a team sport ultimately. No reason why they could not succeed. But yes, Vickie, they'd have to be able to lift and maneuver a bundle. Since we are trending down to less than 220-lbs. per sq that should be doable.....
I'd rather hire a girl than any of the last 20 or so male applicants I've had..........
I've known a few. Fine with me.
