RoofersCoffeeShop® interviews California Polytechnic State University students in the Roofing Alliance competition.

The Roofing Alliance hosted its eighth Construction Management Student Competition at this year’s International Roofing Expo (IRE). RoofersCoffeeShop was LIVE, interviewing the finalists of the student competition to learn what they are looking for in their future roofing careers.

In this interview, Karen Edwards meets with students of California Polytechnic State University Claire Peters, Nick Reeves, Steven Zhang (team co-captain), Nathan Horst (team co-captain) and Chance Geiskinger for insight on coming to IRE for the first time and for them to tell us what the future of the roofing industry will look like.

“This has really been my first taste of roofing,” says Claire about IRE. “Something that I'm super interested in is the ability to go out in the field and really be able to experience what I'm talking about...So seeing all the materials and getting a hands-on approach to all that has been awesome.”

Chance echoes his gratitude for the warm welcome from the industry towards all of the students. “I thought it was really awesome how many people would give us the time of day, even though we're students, we're not contractors coming to this,” Chance shares. “It was a good experience.”

As the upcoming generation of roofing professionals, these students have invaluable insight into what the next generation of roofers is looking for from their employers. These students talk about how they look for good company culture, diversity and opportunity to grow within their future jobs.

“I look for the ability to grow with the company,” says Nick. He talks about how he wants to have a career where he can gain experience in different sections and become a valuable team member to a company.

“I'm really focused on building with a purpose,” says Steven. "Being able to see economy growing and all that is something that I'm really passionate about.”

“I like that Steven, building with purpose,” agrees Nathan. “I would also say diversity is something I do look for. Not a lot of construction companies, especially in the Bay Area, have a ton of diversity, but it brings a lot of different perspectives to a company when there is a lot more diversity in the company.”

RoofersCoffeeShop® interviews the University of Florida students of the Roofing Alliance competition.

The Roofing Alliance hosted its eighth Construction Management Student Competition at this year’s IRE. RoofersCoffeeShop® was on the beat, interviewing the finalists of the student competition and figuring out what they are looking for in a roofing company as they prepare to enter the industry.

In this interview, Karen Edwards meets with the University of Florida student team, comprised of Ryan Freeman, John Zielinski, Ansley Spofford (team captain), Avery Tyndall and Robert Duckworth, for insight on the competition and what the future of the roofing industry will look like.

“We started the process of selecting the team members in September. Then we started working on the proposal, which was 40 pages, including a full estimate site logistics.” says team captain Ansley. “The presentation today was kind of an overview of what that was. Then that was finished by Christmas break December.”

Team members reflected on the project presentations that happened the morning of the interview. “A lot of work went into it,” says John. “My favorite part was seeing it all come together at the end and delivering a product that we were all proud in.”

For the students of the University of Florida , the best part of IRE in general has been “being able to see the trade show, really getting to learn a lot more about working,” says Ansley. “It's just been a great networking event.”

As the upcoming generation of roofing professionals, these students have invaluable insight into what the future of roofing will look like, and into what company culture is attractive to new roofers. “For the most part, we are all looking to work for commercial construction, general contractors for the most part,” says Ryan. “I think something to look for is definitely to be valued and see your work as valuable and to be treated in a manner that, what you do means something.”

John agrees with Ryan’s described workplace, saying he wants to work in a place where his work is appreciated and where he has opportunities to grow and learn. “We can only learn so much in the classroom,” says Ryan. " So we got to learn as much as we can. So basically, I would say the opportunity to learn is what I was looking for.”

“I want it to be somewhere where I'm not afraid to ask questions and can learn as much as possible,” adds Avery. “Also, I think the culture of the company is very important. You're going to be there all the time and I feel like that's the most important thing.”

Ansley also agrees with her colleagues, adding that she looks for not only a place where she feels valued and can learn, but also can see her work itself as a valuable project and where she can be an asset to the company.

Overall, these students are looking to work for companies where they are more than just a number, but a valuable part of a team in a company culture that fosters their growth and development.

The Roofing Alliance, the foundation of the NRCA, has many great initiatives planned for the years ahead.

Although the Roofing Alliance just celebrated its 25-year anniversary, its work in advancing the roofing industry is far from finished. The foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association continually has created valuable resources for roofing industry professionals. Through education, volunteering and networking opportunities, the Roofing Alliance has been an indispensable asset. Dave Lawlor, president of the Roofing Alliance and national sales manager for ROCKWOOL, spoke about the Alliance’s future in an episode of Roofing Road Trips.

With education at the forefront of the Alliance's initiatives, it currently is working with Clemson University to provide students with a roofing-specific course curriculum. Although roofing education is a part of construction management courses, a roofing course curriculum dives deeper into the subject.

“Young people are going to come into the industry and be knowledgeable about roofing,” Lawlor says. “They're going to know it's a great place to work, and they can build a career.”

One great aspect of the Roofing Alliance is how it seeks to grow the industry by providing funding for research and construction projects. Although the deadline for this year’s funding requests has already passed, it’s a good thing to keep in mind for any future projects.

Among other plans for the next year or so, Lawlor plans to add up to 10 new Alliance members during his presidential term. “The networking opportunity is fantastic with Alliance membership,” Lawlor says. “Joining a group of people who are lifting an organization and industry is fantastic.”

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

In honor of Women's History Month, we celebrate some women-led businesses in the roofing.

Roofing is an overwhelmingly male occupation. Whether contractor or crew, the majority of workers are typically men. The U.S. Department of Labor considers roofing a male-dominated profession, but that doesn’t mean women in roofing are unicorns. Take Marianne Sumter, owner of Wil-Mar Products, as proof of how women are not only present in the roofing industry, but are essential to its success.

With a desire to continue her husband’s legacy, Marianne became the owner of Wil-Mar Products, stepping into a leadership role in a male-dominated industry. And she has successfully led the company with strength and expertise. To this day, Marianne continues to provide excellent customer service, meet the demands of the industry and develop lasting relationships with women.

And there are even more stories of women revolutionizing the roofing industry. Women now fill positions ranging from roofing, marketing and sales to consulting, manufacturing and research. Female professionals are also stepping into leadership roles at roofing manufacturing companies and starting their own roofing companies. Read on as we highlight women leading the roofing industry!

Ethelmae Humphreys has been a trailblazer for women in roofing since the 1940s. She had just graduated from high school in 1944 and her parents moved to Joplin, Missouri to start TAMKO Building Products. Ethelmae headed to college at the University of Kansas, earning a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. Upon graduation it became clear that her father’s failing health meant he would need assistance running the company, so she came home and helped out, and was named the executive vice president of TAMKO. Together with her husband, she grew the company into one of the largest privately owned roofing manufacturers in the country. After her husband’s death in 1993, she took over as CEO until her son took on the role of president and CEO the following year.

Associations

Plenty of roofing associations pride themselves on being women-led or having women in high-ranking positions. The Roofing Alliance, celebrating 25 years as the foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), has appointed Alison LaValley as the new executive director and recently has made Kelly Van Winkle the first female vice president.

Additionally, Lisa Pate serves as the executive director of the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association (FRSA), Tracey Prociw is the executive director and board secretary of The Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW) and Suzie Boyd is the current president of the Colorado Roofing Association (CRA). With female leadership, these associations have prospered and grown; these women have paved the path to a better roofing industry.

Plus, there are plenty of women in roofing who hold leadership positions. Johns Manville is proudly led by a team of women who represent their Roofing Systems Leadership, including: Director of Human Resources Brandi Duncan, Director of Product Management and Marketing Jennifer Ford-Smith, Owner Services Leader Mandy Schweitzer, Director of Commercial Services and SIOP Tesha Kroll and Director of Technology Zebonie Sukle.

Many women have started their own businesses in the industry too. Art Unlimited is a women-owned business, with the second-generation leadership of Anna Anderson and Elizabeth Chapman taking the company’s digital and marketing expertise to a national stage.

RoofersCoffeeShop® is women owned and led too! Established in 2002 by Vickie Sharples, the Coffee Shop is “where the industry meets.” Heidi J. Ellsworth became a partner in the company with Vickie in 2015 and today the RCS crew is led by Heidi, who also has her own marketing and consulting business, HJE Consulting.

RCS COO Karen L. Edwards has helped Heidi grow the website and push boundaries in this male-dominated industry that is slow to change. She is also the Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3)’s communications and engagement leader and owns her own marketing and sales company, Casimir Group. Studies show that women who support other women are more successful. Research conducted by Harvard Business Review found that having a network of close female contacts helps females land executive positions.

According to Forbes, these inner circles provide necessary support and recommendations when their peers are faced with challenges and cultural bias, especially in male-dominated industries like roofing. As the president of RoofersCoffeeShop, Heidi has exceled in empowering other women to be successful within the roofing industry, fostering employees at all levels within the company to build a strong network that is both diverse and supportive of all people, brining then into the trades for an opportunity of a great career.

Furthermore, organizations like National Women in Roofing, of which Heidi is a founder, are providing opportunities and support for women in the roofing industry. Today, with the efforts of many in the roofing industry, NWIR has created a new understanding, interest and demand for diversity. Women are more prevalent than ever in the field and at trade shows, meetings and board meetings. Through mentoring, education and networking, women have more support than ever to find a rewarding career in this industry.

There is more than enough space on the roof for women in this industry. With so many female role models and female-led roofing initiatives, the future of roofing looks female!

IB Roof Systems expands humanitarian efforts, partnering with the RCD foundation to deliver food and supplies to the community of Los Cabos, Mexico.

On March 2, 2022, IB Roof Systems humanitarian, feed the families, event was huge. Over 400 families in need will be fed around the Los Cabos area due to the efforts of IB Roof Systems contractors and their families.

During the week long retreat in Los Cabos, Mexico the scheduled two hours for the event was accomplished in 45 minutes. High-fives all-the-way around. Thank you to the RCD foundation for using our donations and buying the food items from local vendors and bringing them out to the resort. Thank you to the staff at the Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos for giving us the room to accomplish this wonderful feat. And thank you to Kyle Thomas, incoming chairmen, for the National Roofing Contractors Association for rolling up your sleeves and joining us on the floor. Finally, thank you for all who donated your precious time and money to this significant cause. This wouldn't have been a success without you opening your hearts.

This event, though small in time commitment, will allow hundreds to go to bed with a full stomach. And all involved can go to bed knowing they made a huge difference in someone's life. Great job everyone!

Going the extra mile

In addition to the food kits, the RCD foundation shared with IB Roof Systems that women in the local area utilized used uniforms from the Hard Rock Hotel and use the material to make stuffed animal monkeys, to sell for income. IB Roof Systems bought 100 monkeys to help. But then found out that the women were washing all the uniforms by hand, Our hearts grew a little bigger and IB purchased a washer and dryer for them to lighten their burden a little more. Thank you, RCD foundation, for bringing this huge need to our attention. Thank you to the Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos for donating your uniforms, and thank you to all who donated money to help families in this time of need.
These five students won the 2022 Roofing Alliance Student Competition at this year’s International Roofing Expo.

The Roofing Alliance, the foundation of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) has been hosting their annual Student Competition for the past eight years. This year, RoofersCoffeeShop® editor, Karen Edwards, got to speak with the winning team from Texas A&M at the International Roofing Expo in New Orleans.

The team was comprised of students studying construction management at their university. Team members included: Kyler Hardison, Blake Bocchino, Kyle Cahill, Canyon Martine and Alexia Palomares. For the competition, they had to submit a bid package for a new roof on the Four Points Sheraton Hotel on Bourbon Street.

Kyler, who took on the role of project manager, says they began their project in fall of last year. “In the fall semester, we do our proposal and that portion of it. And then we pick back up in the spring with the presentation,” he said. “It's really a lot of work. We have to work around everyone's schedule, work and other extracurriculars.”

Kyle, the project estimator, said that logistics and safety were the two most challenging aspects of the project. With the roofing project being located on busy Bourbon Street, the team had to consider the many pedestrians in the area. He also says the hurricane season was also brought into consideration.

While they were in town for the expo, the team got to visit the hotel they did their project on. Blake Bocchino, the project superintendent, said, “It was also nice to see the hotel in function with people moving around, because I spotted a couple other safety concerns that I couldn't really catch just from Google Earth itself.”

The team members expressed interest in working in the roofing industry and they all shared what they are looking for in a future employer. Canyon, the QA/QC director, said he wants to work for a company that cares about his mental health. Alexia, the safety director, said, “I hope to be able to fit in and somewhere I can make an impact in a way.”

We can’t wait to see what the future brings for these students!

This year, Roofing Day is April 5 and 6. Hear from our panel about how this advocacy event is helping the roofing industry thrive.

RoofersCoffeeShop® cannot wait for Roofing Day 2022! This year’s Roofing Day will be held April 5 and 6 at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C.

Heidi J. Ellsworth recently met with an amazing panel comprised of NRCA CEO Reid Ribble, JD Miles and Sons Roofing’s Sherri Miles, the NRCA’s Deborah Mazol, and Technical Director with SPRI Randy Ober to talk about Roofing Day 2022.

Roofing Day in D.C. brings together the entire roofing industry throughout the U.S. to voice our priorities to Congress. A huge part of ensuring that members of Congress hear the critical issues facing the industry, Roofing Day is the largest advocacy event dedicated solely to the roofing industry.

Reid tells Heidi about how Roofing Day was born out of a desire to see the roofing industry better represented to Congress.

“What we decided to do was create NRCA's one voice initiative that pulled manufacturers and distribution into the family, and then allow them to inform our decision making in Washington, D.C.,” Reid says. “I knew that if we went in agreement where the whole industry agreed across the entire supply chain, members of Congress are going to be more receptive to that, and immediately we began to put wins on the board for the roofing industry and the strategy worked.”

Roofing professionals across the board agree that this level of political involvement is crucial to a thriving industry. “I think it's the basic tenant of our civic engagement as well as citizens that people are representing us, and so we need to have our voices heard. There is power in numbers,” agrees Sherri. “Some really powerful, important, and meaningful relationships are built in those few days. It's great to have a common cause certainly, and it's wonderful to be together.”

This event is not only impactful for contractors, but also manufacturers, Randy shares that last year was his first year at Roofing Day and how he is encouraging the trade organization of manufacturers, SPRI, to participate in such an impactful event. “SPRI is encouraging all the manufacturers to participate in this and support the roofing contractors, because 90% of all issues we're in total agreement with, both the roofing contractor base as well as the manufacturer. We certainly want to provide as much support as possible.”

From the lack of ability to get a trained workforce to supply chain issues, Roofing Day is all about finding solutions on a national level. Deborah explains that Roofing Day participation is easy, as contractors and manufacturers will receive all of the support they need to have their voices heard.

“We'll do advocacy training, so you know exactly what to say and how to say it. We'll give you a briefing on the issues so you can be really up to speed on everything that the member of Congress or staff might ask you,” says Deborah. “As well as set up your congressional meetings for you, you don't have to worry about looking up who your representative and senators are, trying to figure out all the logistics, we'll do all of that for you. You'll get a schedule and you just have to show up.”

Roofing Day is an excellent opportunity to make a difference for your business and our industry, RCS looks forward to seeing contractors at this industrywide advocacy event. Events like these, in the words of the honorable Reid Ribble, “have put roofing on the map in the minds of our legislators in Washington.”

Here’s what’s trending on RoofersCoffeeShop®(RCS) this past month.

In looking at our most popular articles for the month of February, we saw that technology and more specifically, apps for your business, was the topic that had the most interest from our readers. The article has a nice overview of apps used for measuring, estimating, photo management and customer relationship management. We are always looking for solutions that make running businesses easier and more efficient.

Supply chain issues and material shortages are again in the most popular articles as the industry wonders when things will ease up and looks for ways to work around the issue. Because we are all about people at RCS, we weren’t surprised to see our 2022 Influencers announcement and the NRCA officers and directors announcement make the top 10.

Featured projects are also a popular topic at RCS and two of our project profiles caught the interest of our readers with cool roofs and green roofs making the list.
