Re-use and recycle 

Environmentally responsible materials are more popular than ever, which is why an endlessly recyclable metal that won’t lose its strength and durability is a key component in EXCEPTIONAL® Metals’ pledge to reduce their environmental impact.

Sika has been publishing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its products since 2012 and its extensive EPD portfolio covers all of its construction target markets, from roof to basement. The only liquid-applied roofing and waterproofing systems that offer a fully disclosed cradle-to-grave EPD are Sikalastic RoofPro products. 

Duro-Last, Inc. is the first manufacturer to publish a product specific PVC environmental product declaration (EPD) for single-ply membranes, reporting the lifecycle environmental impact of each of their membrane products. Green technology

What is smog? 

Smog exists where emissions exist, even if you don't always see it. Smog is a form of air pollution resulting from the interaction of UV sunlight with chemicals in the atmosphere like nitrogen oxides that get into the air primarily from the burning of fossil fuels (ex. vehicle emissions). As a gas, smog is easily inhaled, making it extremely hazardous to humans and animals, and can lead to severe health risks including lung tissue damage, bronchial infections and heart problems. 

How smog-reducing granules work and the science behind them 

Sunlight interacts with these granules to convert smog into water-soluble ions. The granules, which blend inconspicuously into a shingle’s color, contain a photocatalytic coating which, when activated by the UV rays of the sun, creates the energy needed to break apart airborne water molecules (like from humidity) into their component parts (e.g., H2O breaks into H and OH). 

The newly formed OH molecule, called a hydroxyl radical, seeks to bind with other molecules. When a smog molecule gets near a roof, the OH molecule binds with it, chemically transforming it from a dangerous, inhalable gas (NO2) into a water-soluble, nitrate salt solid (NO3), a plant-usable form of nitrogen that washes away with rainwater as a mild fertilizer. 

NEX® Rubberized Asphalt retains smog-reducing granules 

Malarkey’s NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt improves granule retention in two ways. One, it preserves asphalt’s natural suppleness and stickiness for deeper granule embedment and adhesion. Two, its rubberlike ability to expand and contract enables it to grip and regrip granules through repeated thermal cycles, resulting in stronger, longer granule retention and extended shingle life. Malarkey shingles have up to 65% greater granule adhesion than the industry standard shingle specification (ASTM D3462).

Installation of smog-reducing roofing shingles helps improve air quality for us all. Increasingly, contractors are being recognized for their commitment to sustainability by installing Malarkey shingles. Further south in Monterey Bay, California, a contractor was recognized by local government for his team’s commitment to improving air quality. They have added many new features including a roof designer, information on sustainable roofing and fresh, vibrant videos. 

A neat addition to the new site simply answers the question: ‘Why Malarkey?’ On this page readers find the brand’s unique value proposition laid out simply, with links to dive deeper into the content about what makes Malarkey shingles. Elsewhere, the site highlights their many great products, including their highly durable and sustainably designed shingles. The homepage features what makes their products great in four categories: craftmanship, performance, sustainability and environmental impact. 

For contractors, not only is there an updated tool to find a distributor, but the ‘find a contractor’ tool has also been updated for homeowners as well. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) announced the winning projects in the 2022 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards. 

This program recognizes low and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects from across North America based on four categories: Reasons for Selecting Asphalt, Performance, Beauty, and Distinction.

“We received over 80 submissions this year. This year’s applicant pool was particularly unique, with entries from six different countries,” said Reed Hitchcock, ARMA’s Executive Vice President. “North American manufacturers are providing quality asphalt roofing materials to projects worldwide, highlighting asphalt’s versatility, beauty, performance, and durability. As roofing contractors across North America continue to evolve, the Excellence Awards program is an opportunity to showcase their creativity and resilience.”

This year’s Gold Award was presented to Black Hills Exteriors for the Scull Residence, a Queen Anne Victorian-style home located in the heart of Black Hills, a mountain range in Rapid City, South Dakota. Black Hills Exteriors integrated two shingle colors to preserve the home's distinct characteristics, giving the roof a unique curb appeal. The contractor fully repaired the extensive hail damage on the 5,500 square foot roof with CertainTeed Carriage House shingles. This roof system will protect the project against harsh winters for years to come.

Weatherguard Roofing was awarded the Silver Award for their work on The Island House of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Weatherguard Roofing selected GAF Slateline Shingles for this complete roof replacement due to their algae StainGuard protection, and Class A fire rating. The homeowner wanted a slate-like appearance to complement the copper additions but desired the durability and strength of asphalt shingle construction. This project illustrates the exquisite beauty of asphalt and demonstrates the reliability of asphalt shingles to protect structures from the elements.

The Bronze Award was presented to Green Horizons for The Island House Hotel of Mackinac Island, Michigan which utilized the Malarkey Legacy shingle line. The structure was originally built in 1852 on one of the most valuable historic sites in the State of Michigan. Due to its unique location and the island-wide ban on motorized vehicles, every single material that arrived at the jobsite had to be delivered to a mainland ferry, loaded onto a freighter boat, and then transported to the project site by horse. Green Horizons rose to the challenge and utilized asphalt shingles to maintain the historic aesthetic while providing the necessary strength and durability to protect this island property.

Additionally, three projects were recognized as Honorable Mentions.

Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodge by Roofloor Enterprises Corp., in Baguio City, Philippines received an Honorable Mention Award. The Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges is a master-planned development of lodge-style log homes, situated on an 82-hectare property. The project resides at an elevation of 5,300 feet. In a given year, the region experiences approximately eight to nine tropical storms. Roofloor Enterprises Corp. selected PABCO Premier Laminated shingles to complete this job. The architects and engineers on the project utilized asphalt shingles because of their reliability, durability, and overall system strength. 

Rutter Roofing & Exteriors received an Honorable Mention Award for Haverford Residence in Haverford, Pennsylvania. The home had donned a cedar shake roof, but the homeowner wanted less maintenance and the peace of mind from durability. Rutter Roofing & Exteriors selected CertainTeed Presidential Shake asphalt shingles to bring depth and dimension to match the castle-style exterior while adding the durability, strength, and resilience of asphalt shingles.

GA-148: Jerrold Clark, a multi-million dollar property in Atlanta, Georgia with a complex structure, garnered an Honorable Mention Award for Greater American Roofing. Greater American Roofing’s design scope included a replacement of the current roofing system with a designer asphalt shingle to maintain the look of the home since it is a castle-style exterior with a substantial amount of stone. The new roof also needed to complement the copper trim and architecture. This stunning roof replacement utilized GAF Camelot II shingles to elevate this home, which is now being used as a model within the private neighborhood.

Ben Rucka from Malarkey Roofing highlights the impressive history of sustainable practices in his company. 

In Season 3, Episode 59 of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth speaks with Ben Rucka, Southern California district manager at Malarkey Roofing. The two discuss the smog-reducing granules that the company has been incorporating into their shingles in their ongoing effort towards sustainability. These efforts are not new for the company, as Ben highlights Malarkey’s long history of caring for the environment. 

Malarkey Roofing initially started out as a paper company more than 60 years ago, but soon became the roofing manufacturer it is known as today. Former President Michael Malarkey had been making strides in being more sustainable as far back as the 1980s. Not only did he reuse methane gas from the Portland landfill to power the facility, he once travelled all the way to Europe research way to change the shingle making process. 

“You have to do something to raise the melt point temperature [of traditional asphalt] to be able to make a shingle,” Ben said. “Michael Malarkey went over to Europe and found out that there were a couple chemicals you could mix with that asphalt to raise the melt point temperature without having to put all that energy into raising the melt point temperature.” 

Along with their smog-reducing granule technology, Malarkey Roofing combines high-grade asphalt with virgin rubber polymers, and recycled rubber and plastic polymers. Their proprietary NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt technology chemically strengthens and rubberizes the asphalt core of the shingle for superior all-weather resilience and longer product life, all while reducing landfill waste. This asphalt is the foundation for the brand’s popular roofing offerings, such as  the Legacy shingle. “That architectural shingle has really been part of the expansion of Malarkey from west to east,” Ben says. 

Their most recent effort to offer sustainable products is their incorporation of smog-reducing granules into all of their shingles. Ben says that Malarkey was so excited when they were able to use the granules in their shingles. “This has not been someone sitting behind the curtains like the Wizard of Oz coming up with this,” he said. “This has been revolution by evolution and trial and error and all the experience of all those years coming up with the shingle and now to be able to offer this smog-reduction feature is an amazing, amazing achievement.”

Malarkey Roofing’s Ben Rucka breaks down the innovative technology behind this special shingle coating. 

RCS President Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Ben Rucka, district manager of Malarkey Roofing in Season 3, Episode 59 of Roofing Road Trips. In the podcast, Ben discussed how they have been utilizing 3M™ Smog-reducing Granules in all of their shingles and how their company incorporates upcycled materials into their products.  

“It really is similar to a catalytic converter,” said Ben when describing the process. The granules are incorporated into the coating on the shingles Malarkey Roofing makes. When it interacts with smog, the granules get the smog attached to it and change the catalytic ions into an NO3. Then, the NO3 gets rinsed off the granule with moisture such as rain or dew and the coating on the granule stays in tact.”  

Since 2019, every shingle Malarkey Roofing has made has used this granule, making it available at every price point. “If you buy a Malarkey roof and it's 30 squares, you're planting two and a half trees in your yard without planting those trees, which is an incredible benefit to all,” Ben said. 

Ben delved into how Malarkey Roofing has always been trying to be sustainable with their practices. He told the story of former President Michael Malarkey who wanted to reduce the amount of methane being emitted from a Portland landfill. Ben said, “He basically financed a pipe to bring that methane gas from the landfill to our plant and still to this day, our fiberglass mat is made with a big chunk of that methane gas from the Portland landfill.” 

Malarkey Roofing is always looking for ways to be more sustainable by using recycled materials. In one of their shingles, the Highlander NEX 241, they actually incorporate upcycled material into the shingle. Ben states, “If you ever look at different plastics, they all have a number on them. We are using certain versions of that plastic to mix in our shingle blend and we came up with the next formulation of asphalt and that's really been a big winner in my world, the Highlander NEX 241. It's a great shingle.”
