It is with great sadness that we report the loss of a good friend, former CRA Member and colleague in the roofing industry.  

Richard Burke (65) passed away on March 13, 2022 in Canton, Georgia. Richard was born January 31, 1957 to Robert (Bob) and Frances (Green) Burke in DeWitt, Iowa.

Richard had 23 years of hands-on roofing experience and 15 years as a roof consultant. From 1983 – 1990 he worked through the Roofers Local Union 32 Rock Island Illinois. From 1990-2003 he worked at D&D Roofing & WeatherSure Roofing in Denver, Colorado.

Richard began his roof consulting career with Cybercon Engineering in 2015 and in 2018 relocated to Georgia and worked for Southern Roof Consultants South Pasadena Florida. 

Richard came up through the low slope roofing business as a ”Hot Tar“ roofer and foremen. He made a point to become fluent in Spanish so he could better understand and communicate with his crew members. 

Richard was a long-time member of the Colorado Roofing Association as both a contractor and consultant. He was seen often at our membership lunches and pinpoint seminars.

Richard was a Registered Roof Observer, certified by the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC). During 2009-2016, he served as a director and a term as president on the IIBEC Denver Chapter Board of Directors.

He was an Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears enthusiast, enjoyed gambling, fishing and travel. He is survived by his wife Tami, two sons Russell and Robert, daughter Jade as well as his mother and sisters.

Highlights from the 2021 Q4 survey on reroofing market trends indicate expansion and optimism in the industry. 

The Q4 results of the Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing are finally here! Roofing contractors and consultants gave their thoughts on the state of the reroofing market. For this survey, 73% of respondents were roofing contractors and 27% were consultants. In terms of market type, 88% of respondents stated that their business was low slope or a combination of low and steep slope and 12% reported they only work in steep slope. 

In this year's survey, the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) introduced two new features: the Project Contracts Index and the Customer Inquiries Index. The intent of these indexes is to provide members of the reroofing industry a number that can help them better understand the state of the market. 

The Customer Inquiries Index is based on a scale of 0-100. Any score above 50 indicates optimism or expansion and anything below 50 indicates pessimism or contraction. For Q4, the index number was 63.8 compared to 62.2 for Q3. 

The Project Contracts Index is based on this same scale and for Q4, the number was 61.1. Q3 had an index number of 59.4, so this is quite the increase! In terms of project backlog, 51% of respondents reported a backlog of three months or more as of January 2022. 

49% of respondents reported that the number of project contracts increased for Q4, with 33% reporting no change and 22% reporting a decrease. For customer inquiries, 49% reported that inquiries increased, with 31% reporting no change and 21% reporting a decrease.

Roofing professionals are invited to join industry trade associations representing contractors, consultants and manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada in taking part in the latest Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing to evaluate business conditions during the fourth quarter of 2021.

The purpose of the survey is to take the pulse of the reroofing industry on a quarterly basis and serve as a regular barometer of the industry’s business conditions. By asking a handful of business questions and measuring responses across a number of demographics, the survey helps give an indication of the reroofing market’s strength and trajectory. 

The results of the Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing are made available to survey participants via an online dashboard that enables users to filter results by region and other metrics. 

For the previous survey that measured business activity during the third quarter of 2021, 58% of responses came from roofing contractors and 42% came from roof consultants. The results indicate opportunities in the reroofing industry improved or held steady compared with the same quarter in 2020. 

The survey is an industrywide effort to collect information about the reroofing market spearheaded by a coalition of trade associations, including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Chemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc., EPDM Roofing Association, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, Metal Construction Association, National Roofing Contractors Association, National Women in Roofing, Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.

Edward A. Sheridan discusses how supply chain issues have impacted him directly in his latest message. 

It’s well-known by now that most industries, including the roofing industry, are facing supply chain problems. In his latest message, President Edward A. Sheridan of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC), describes how these issues are impacting him and how he’s getting through it. 

Edward opens his message by discussing how he too is struggling to meet deliverables for his own work. He expresses disappointment in the fact that he is facing difficulties in completing an order for Director of Publications and Communications Christian Hamaker due to supply chain issues. 

He goes on to explain how complex the construction industry really is and why exactly these issues are so prevalent. He writes in his message, “Like other industries, construction supply and demand has always been characterized as self-balancing, but demand has mostly been king, whether it be high through boom times or low during economic downturns or natural disasters.” 

Edward adds to this by highlighting the reasons that these issues seem to last longer than they usually do. He makes it point to expand on the name ‘supply-chain’ as being too simple of term, as the word ‘chain’ implies something simple and linear. Edward believes that his experiences with these disruptions has shown him, and others in the industry, that the model is flawed and deserves to be re-examined. 

“One scholar has even suggested we should change ‘supply chain’ to ‘supply ecology’, to paint a more accurate picture of the complexity and interconnected relationships in the construction world,” Edward says. Rather than viewing the supply chain process as a straightforward model, he suggests we start viewing it as being more complex than we initially believed it to be. 

Once this re-evaluation occurs, Edward says that we can then know how to handle these problems in the future and reduce how often they happen.

The testing protocol is focused on developing real-world outcomes for the application of these products. 
 
Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates is a global firm of engineers, architects and materials scientists committed to helping clients solve, repair and avoid problems in the built world. WJE engineers and materials scientists will be conducting the tests for MRCA at their own state-of-the-art testing laboratory located in Northbrook, Illinois.

This is a panel discussion with a professional building consultant, an owner (or owner's rep), and a contractor. During this session, we will discuss how to build the team to have the most successful project for everyone. We will talk about the differences between working with a consultant and direct with the owner, the importance of communication and how that affects the team and the benefits of working with a team for all parties involved. 

There seems to be one of two types of contractor perceptions regarding consultants: 1) consultants are unnecessary and 2) consultants get in the way. The exception is when a contractor and consultant work collaboratively to ensure the best possible outcome for the owner. How can this be best promoted within the industry? The role of the consultant is to be a facilitator between the owner and contractor. The consultant is there to ensure the owner's interests are protected and the contractor has the clearest roadmap to the next successful project.
