RoofersCoffeeShop® is proud to award our October Roofer of the Month to Guardian Home Services located in Auburn, Washington. Owners Matt and Lori Swanson have a combined experience of 60 years in the roofing business, and sat down with RCS Podcast Producer Megan Ellsworth to discuss how they have been able to go above and beyond for every customer in a full-service company.  

Lori kicked off the conversation by detailing her experience helping her father, a roofing contractor, with his business. From him, she learned the basics of safety, quality installation and most importantly, how to treat customers right.  

“I worked on the roof and in the business all through high school and college. After college, I was heavily recruited by my father to work full-time in his business, which I didn't think I was going to do but it's been a wonderful experience,” said Lori. “I’ve learned so much and this industry is so awesome and such a community.” 

Growing up, Matt didn’t think he’d end up in the trades. He put himself through college graduating with a finance degree and, working as a stockbroker for a few years afterwards. It was during this period of his life that he realized he wanted to take a different path. 

“Frankly, I just didn't like it. I wasn't really feeling like I was helping people,” said Matt. 

In 2005, Lori and Matt started their own residential company, Guardian Roofing. At the time, just a few years before the recession, Lori and Matt faced a lot of competition from large companies who had already taken up significant market space. In order to differentiate themselves and generate business, Lori and Matt decided to adopt a “client for life” mentality. Now with an employee base of 92 people, the business owners are proud of their company and credit its success to their customer-centric model. 

“We adopted the client for life mentality. What we would do is take all the things that no one wanted to do, which meant repair and maintain roofs, with the hopes that we would plant those seeds and grow roof replacement clients in the future,” said Lori. “At that particular time in 2005, we were really the only company that developed [this model] and worked at it. That's because the bigger companies in the area would overlook those not-so-great leads that were, ‘We need this little repair,’ or, ‘We have a leak.’ And we were like, ‘We're hungry, we'll take those.’”

Since 2014, the roofing industry has seen job openings double – but the number of hires has only increased by 14 percent. This makes getting a quality contractor onto the job site as quickly as possible imperative, however roofing companies are weary of compromising quality for speed.

The Halo Project is another way Guardian Roofing says thank you to loyal customers. 

Guardian Roofing owners Matt and Lori Swanson understand that their success is due to the community customers who keep coming back and the employees who continue to deliver amazing service. While they have often partnered with other companies in giving back to the community, they had yet to pilot a project themselves.  

That fact has since changed and Guardian Roofing’s The Halo Project was born. This new initiative gives deserving homeowners in need of critical roof repair or replacement the opportunity to receive new or replaced roofs free of charge.  

Recipients of The Halo Project are found through community nominations. The first recipients were Cindy Lu and Pat Vaughn from Federal Way, Washington. Cindy Lu received more than 30 community nominations and is known throughout the area as ‘the neighborhood grandmother.’  

To receive a new roof from The Halo Project, one must be nominated either by oneself or by a member in the community. They must have a roof in critical need of repair or replacement and they must live in the Pacific Northwest. For more information visit Guardian’s website.  

“We really wanted to thank the community for their support,” says Guardian spokeswoman Morgan Roth to the Auburn Reporter. “If we didn’t have loyal customers who trust us, we wouldn’t be here.” 

Other recent recipients of the Guardian Halo Project include single mother Andrea Bachofer and Jessica Allen, a widow of a former roofer. Both families are currently enjoying their new roofs. 

Venders can also give back through the Halo Project and Guardian Roofing is appreciative of the companies that have come together to make changes in people’s everyday lives. Some of the companies who have donated time, materials and expertise include GAF, Owens Corning, DTG Recycling and High-Point Gutters.

Guardian Roofing’s Halo Project donates a new roof to a deserving couple facing difficulties.

Known as the “neighborhood grandparents,” Pat and Cindy Lu Vaughn have made a life for themselves in Federal Way, Washington.  For over 30 years they’ve resided in the same home Cindy’s parents lived in, and where they raised their two daughters. It’s not uncommon for them to stop what they’re doing to jump the car of a stuck neighbor, deliver a heater to a family at 8 p.m., or offer a stranger hot soup and a cup of coffee in the winter.  In an interview with Auburn Reporter, Cindy explained, “Sometimes a little caring goes a long way...I do what I can to help whoever I can.  I’m the giver. I’m the caretaker.”

And it doesn’t go unnoticed.  Karisa Ridgeway, one of their neighbors quickly learned of their kindness.  She told the Auburn Reporter about, “how selfless they are, how much they go above and beyond to help everyone, no matter if they are the neighbor, someone on the side of the road, or their kids.  They will quite literally give you the shirt off the back (I’ve seen it).”

Cindy left her career to become a full-time grandma to her four grandchildren and the neighborhood kids.  Cindy claimed to the Auburn Reporter, “That’s part of the community. We know all of our neighbors; our neighbors know all of us.  We look out for each other.” Pat works in construction, but has been waiting for his health to improve before going back to work.

In 2013, Pat was diagnosed with bladder cancer, which has required 12 surgeries throughout the years.  Additionally he discovered he had atrial fibrillation. Cindy suffered from a nearly fatal aneurysm that ruptured in her brain.

On top of their health problems, part of their roof collapsed from the weight of their dish satellite.  They created a makeshift roof out of tarp to protect their home from the elements. As their health issues and bills continued to pile up, repairing the roof was last on their list.  Cindy commented to the Auburn Reporter, “...it just seemed like, we’ll get to it, we’ll get to it.”

Knowing of their health struggles and how much they give back to her and the neighborhood, Ridgeway sent a message to the Facebook community stating, “I want to get Cindy and Pat a roof.  No matter what it takes.” Kelly Walters, a member of the online group, works for Guardian Roofing, which is a residential contractor business that provides repairs, replacements, and roof projects, and suggested she nominate the Vaughns for the company’s Halo Project.  This project relies on the community to nominate a local neighbor in need of a new roof or significant roof repair.

On Giving Tuesday in 2018, clients and community members nominated deserving households through social media and Guardian Roofing’s website.  According to Morgan Roth, executive assistant at Guardian Roofing, the community rallied and the Vaughns received more than 30 nominations from residents in Federal Way, Northeast Tacoma, and Brown’s Point.  

Cindy could not believe the good news.  “It was like, wait, what? You know, you don’t win anything.  And what are the next steps? What are the strings attached here?  It’s just unbelievable,” she told the Auburn Reporter.

This project allowed Guarding Roofing to return to the neighborhood that really helped them take off.  After the devastation caused by the Hanukkah Eve windstorm that hit the Puget Sound area, Guardian received numerous jobs.  Roth explained to the Auburn Reporter, “It’s really unique that we are able to give back to this neighborhood that allowed us to become what we are today.”

The new roof was a labor of love.  Owens Corning donated the shingles and roofing paper, and Guardian received other donations as well.  Nearly all of the roofing employees from Guardian volunteered their skills and time to complete the project.

Roth reflected to the Auburn Reporter, “As much as she’s helped them, the community is helping her.”  Now the “neighborhood grandparents” can continue to safely guard over their community thanks to the compassion of Guardian Roofing and their charitable Halo Project.

Brittany Wimbish shares personal and professional success at NWIR Day 2019.

My family has been in the roofing industry for over 40 years, and I've been in the industry for approximately 10 years. I began as a receptionist working at our family roofing and construction business and was only expected to handle miscellaneous tasks.  However, I was eager to learn more about the business and now I am the manager of operations and administration of Fields Roof Service, Inc. and Top Rung Construction Co. out of Kent, Washington.

As you grow in this industry as a woman, there are not many other women available to seek advice from or relate to. When I was asked to attend the informational meeting for the creation of the Seattle Chapter of National Women in Roofing (NWIR) by RCS Influencer and NWIR 2019 Chair, Jennifer Stone, I was ecstatic! I have become driven by the idea of cultivating a group of other women with similar experiences and stories to learn from. The roofing sisterhood that works within this male-dominated industry has so many perspectives. If we can band together to help the next woman coming into the industry feel a sense of belonging, support, and easier navigation, we will only continue to help our industry become better.    

As a member of the Seattle Chapter of NWIR, I feel empowered to make even bigger decisions to further my career. One of those first choices this past year was to attend my first NWIR Day at IRE. On top of it being my first NWIR Day, it was my first roofing expo. Initially, I felt I needed to justify why I wanted to go, break down the budget to go, and convince the powers that be that sending me would be worth the investment. I’ve learned many women have felt this way in this circumstance. I knew that going to NWIR Day was going to be impactful, and whatever I needed to do to get around the association was going to be worth it. And it was.

Lucky enough, we have a driven and committed board of women heading up our Seattle Chapter. Each of them made individual decisions to attend NWIR Day and IRE, and it was later, that we all realized we would get to experience it together.  Of approximately 35 members of the Seattle Chapter, 7 of us attended.

Sunday after NWIR Day, Monica Parks was able to coordinate space for us to meet for lunch at one of her client’s locations, Diskin Cider. We were able to continue discussing the impact of the speakers at NWIR Day and what each of us got from the breakouts. The excitement from the previous day helped open candid conversations about our chapter goals, frustrations within the chapter, and what we wanted to get from being a part of the chapter.

One of the big projects we have taken on is a SheBuild Project with the partnership of Rebuilding Together South Sound. Rebuilding Together has a mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. As an NWIR Chapter, we are the volunteer leadership. So, we took the time that afternoon to assess how planning was going, provide updates on our participation in the planning, and then map out next steps and timelines.  Some of us have never put on a harness or held a nail gun so we have been able to execute a training day of shingle installation thanks to Guardian Roofing and Fall Safety training at Chinook Roofing. But that day we were able to walk away from the meeting taking ownership of our tasks, feeling inspired and determined to have this project executed well. 

Our next adventure was to follow up on a conversation from the night before and get tattoos! One of us got their first tattoo, another a touch-up, and three of us got new ones. There were a few onlookers that just enjoyed the atmosphere and excitement! We've been able to cultivate a sisterhood of trust throughout this trip. I believe it has to do with our ability to be open with one another and truly see this as an environment of openness and understanding.

That evening we ended up gathering at Sambuca, a great restaurant in Nashville for dinner that had a great jazz band. We spoke about mentorship and how we could help each other in our careers, and also shared our obstacles and triumphs. We each are striving to create a growth culture in our businesses and talked about where that starts. We discussed overcoming sexism with salary and wages. We all have different stories, but we can find so many similarities.

Even though our collective backgrounds and experiences are so varied - from a new company owner rebranding to long term ownership, to management and administration - we're still able to give advice and ask vulnerable questions within our group. Adding value to the newest member and offering an array of information and support begins with who we are as a group; which is why we are planning to have mentorship-focused meetings in the latter half of this year.  We’re hoping to have it unfold in two ways: one, where a member will tell their story and the other chapter members will ask questions about their experience; and two, where a member will raise a problem or question and the other members will provide their perspectives to help address it. I have personally seen through the NWIR when women help other women it allows each to grow personally, grow their careers and grow as a community.

Being a part of National Women in Roofing has already helped me become more confident in myself and my skill set because I know I have great women supporting me, cheering me on, allowing me to be me, and to focus on my career within this great industry. Our biggest impact as an association is going to be with the newest members. I saw this while volunteering during the IRE at the National Women in Roofing booth. It was great meeting women that were already a part of the association; especially learning how they are involved in our industry, and how they got started.

The most impactful thing you can tell a potential new member is your story. I heard multiple prospects say how passionate we are and how they are excited to join their local chapter and learn about NWIR. Each person that volunteered at our booth was genuinely focused on helping that next new person. Which is why our Seattle Chapter has reached out to our location Roofing Contractors Association of Washington and we were able to attend and have a booth at their trade show. Our local roofing community needs to know who we are and what we are doing, and this is just one of the first steps we’re taking. I am excited to take my experiences at NWIR Day and IRE to the RCAW and our industry plus our upcoming meetings so we can continue rallying that next new person.

Guardian Roofing has set a goal to collect 500 coats and raise a minimum of $500.

Washington-state based Guardian Roofing is kicking off a winter coat drive to help their local community and are also participating in the One Warm Coat National Coat Drive program as their way of giving back. They recently provided the following update about their efforts in their company newsletter.

“One of the greatest rewards of having a small business has been the ability to give back to the community. When we first started Guardian, we didn’t have a lot of extra funds so we held our very own winter coat drive and would donate them to the Tacoma Rescue Mission. The peace of mind, safety, and warmth provided by a good roof reminded us of the security, comfort, and warmth one feels when they are protected by a warm coat.

In the frosty days ahead, the need for warm coats will only continue to increase! This is exactly why Guardian Roofing will be bringing back a past tradition to fill our trucks full of warm winter coats! We are officially kicking off our Warm Coat Drive with this December newsletter and next week will begin to collect and deliver them to local charities here in Pierced and King Co.

Guardian Unveils Growth & Acquisition Strategy; Aims to Expand Geographic Reach, Roofing Services in Near Term

Local roofing contractor Guardian Roofing (www.guardianroofing.com) today announced the recent acquisition of Seattle-based roofing contractor competitor Jorve Roofing (www.Jorve.com). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 2005, Guardian is a local, family-owned roofing contractor led by roofing industry veterans, and husband-and-wife team, Lori and Matt Swanson. The firm specializes in roof repairs, roof replacements, inspections, maintenance and moss proofing. Guardian employs 50 full-time technicians, sales professionals and staff, and gained 25 new full-time team members with the acquisition of Jorve. While the companies have been operating as separate brands, over time, the two businesses will begin to operate solely under the Guardian brand.

This is Guardian’s first acquisition and represents a shift for the company into a growth strategy that will focus on expanding its footprint across Washington State, as well as into Oregon and Idaho. The firm is also considering expanding Guardian’s line of services.

“As an iconic Pacific Northwest brand with a strong reputation, Jorve was a natural fit for acquisition to help us grow our local footprint,” said Guardian Roofing Founder and Co-Owner Matt Swanson. “We’ve always had a strong presence in Pierce County, and Jorve has the same strong brand awareness in King County—which made the acquisition a great fit.”
