Stephen, glad to hear you are familiar with this wonderful wood. I'm glad someone in your family knew about it. Don't give that bow away, it wasn't until you mentioned the bow, I had totally forgotten my husband telling me of the multiple purposes of the wood. It was used for arrows, weapons, tools & heat. I'm sure I'm forgetting more.

I still haven't started my woodstove. I DON'T want to hear about your Cherry Wood Fire.PC

Patty, only thing I know about Osage Orange is that somewhere around here I have a bow my dad made from osage orange as a kid- so it probably dates to the mid/late 1930's and it is still supposed to be considered the premier bow wood in this country

currently burning a cherry wood fire stephen

Since we are talking wood. Any of you familiar with Osage Orange? An extremely dense wood, you cut it and it is yellow. My knowledge is very general. You will find it along small creeks & rivers, started by Indians. Now I'm in PA, this could be a local thing, since Osage Indians lived around here. Tough to cut, tough to hawl but burns like hell. Just bought 2.8 AC ....and a new chainsaw.

Lots of Cherry and Oak. Some other trees unidentified yet. When we get moved into the house we plan on a Soapstone burner and managing the "forest" for years of wood supply.

Cleaning the place up we are stacking the green stuff for next year. Several stacks already, 'cause where we cut it, is where we stack it. We are hoping for 3 yrs. worth of stock from the clean-up and low hanging limbs/ topping.

I have learned that ASH is the best tree to plant for our needs, but there is the Emerald Ash Borer about and I may have to go to to a Birch (?) I think.

Between the trees and the chickens it'll be an experience :)

Coppersmith, my chimmney is now good. Honestly. My wood is seasoned. Once I start burning I'm burning. It is a chore, I'm not looking forward to it but nothing new. I have heard of this creoste burner before both good & bad, never found the necessity for it. I have a guage on my pipe, I will burn hot on occasion just for the burn out. If you or others think I need more education, I'm listening.

You finally made the move to Ohio. I know were talking about it for awhile.

As for the softwood, time will tell. I might be getting another delivery. We are dropping it at that. PC

Patty do yourself a favor and go to Home depot and get some Safety flue. It's a chemical that helps prevent creosote build up. You just through it in a hot fire once a week. I burnt wood for the last 45 years. This is the first year I wont have to in my new Ohio home. DON'T KNOW WHAT I WILL DO WITH ALL MY SPARE TIME. LOL Maybe the guy didn't take you up on your offer because he only has soft wood. ( FIREWOOD JOKE) :woohoo:

Stephen you made me laugh a few times. won't listen to logic...love it...fireplaces are nice to look at but impraticle. As long as she is happy so what. Now the Cherry wood? smell good?

I think I sold the guy slate repairs. LOL

I asked my wood guy out for a date...he didn't answer...I think I took him by surprise.

I'm a bit older than him but we are both single. LOL PC

I don't heat with wood- but my house has 2 nice fireplaces so we do build several fires a week through the winter. Nothing says "it's the holiday season" like a roaring fire in the fireplace( even though it actually makes the house colder- wife loves the fireplaces-won't listen to logic-but as long as she is happy, so what?)

I actually bought a load of cherry yesterday and got it stacked( i think I sold the wood guy some slate repairs at the same time)- i still have some hickory left over from last year so I am good to go for the winter. stephen

I might have a week left before I have to get serious. Some serious weather going on out west, we might get the tail of it in a few days. PC

I will hopefully be heating with wood soon, but unfortunately I won't be feeling the nice wood heater effect. I bought an outdoor furnace that will heat my hot water, house, and garage(which currently has no heat). I'm stoked about it. I got it close to connected today, but I need yet another part!!
