I dont think we can stop the storm chasers. They come in just like the storm their chasing. I think the best way to hanle them is to act like one. Beef up you sales force and your production staff for 3-4 months and then trim back as work falls off. The storm chasing salesman is one thing, the storm chasing installers are a whole different breed and you really have to keep an eye on them. The come in and say they have insurance and comp but most of the don't. we put the salepeople and the installer on payroll and we didnt pay them until we got paid. We had that huge storm down here in Oct 2010(still doing workoff of it), I hired some salespeople and installers. They tried dictating how, what and when they were getting paid. We showed them our process, our payscale and our expectations. Some didnt like it and moved on, the others that stay made good money for themselves and my company. I put my ouwn supervisors on the installing crews to keep the problems to a minimum. We had some early problems but they worked out. It proved to be better than battling them, or worse losing most of the work to them.

CIAK, they won't get them all. We have about 6 shopping center roofs that were hit and I'd be surprised if we don't get them all.

Our shop is in Arlington, on Arkansas Lane. Maybe I can buy you lunch during the storm.

twill59 Said: Just sayin, they are only competition sometimes, not always. There is a world outside of Ins. Work & Stormin.

During those times when they are competition they are organized and voracious. I wouldn't call them ethical, truthful, honest, knowledgable or legal but they are competition. I think they are crooks......... but they don't care what I think. And I don't blame them. I know that some of these guys are making some serious money, and that's all they care about- take the money and run. I'm sure they sleep soundly and see nothing wrong with what they do. As long as insurance companies will play the game with them and as long as homeowners can get a roof paid for by the insurance companies this will continue. We can't change the way things are so all we can do is find our niche and keep plugging away.

Mustve been crazy seein them fly down the road. Do you think they had the neighborhoods mapped out too?

The Lovely Mrs Ciak and I arrive in Dallas at the hotel the travel agent secured for us. We are watching local news. Sure enough, I see the same trucks running around behind the reporter and in view of the camera. Planned I don't know. Sophisticate perhaps. How they got in there is another question. Intelligent yes. B) :) :) B) Deep Down In Florida Where The Sun Shines Damn Near Every Day

Ok Tom. I have and will continue to make minor spelling mistakes. However that being said doesn't change the fact that these guys are aware ,alert and at the ready to consume every lead every possibility to capture as many if not all the roofing projects available in a catastrophe event. The point I was trying to make. The Lovely Mrs Ciak and I are driving the Magic Bus from the fires in Colorado toward Texas. On the way I get a phone call that tells me to stop because there are tornadoes touching down in Texas and I have been told to find a place to settle until the weather clears. It was not more than max 1 hour after that I see caravans of stomers racing through the storms toward Dallas. B) :) :) B) Deep Down In Florida Where The Sun Shines Damn Near Every Day

True Chuck, excpet Mickey D's and Kelsey's SteakHouse are not really competing. Perhaps the term is they compliment each other.

Not everyone eats a Big Mac everyday, nor a steak every night.

I could deal with the stormers the same as I would deal w/ any other low ball "competition" (your word, not mine): When the stormer/ lowballer completes the job, they hand the customer my card. And when/ if problems arise, customer calls and AMARCO Roofing will come out and service the roof for $80 per hr. + materials.

Paid directly by the homeowner to AMARCO of course

This is called complimenting each other, not competing.

Robert Said: Well when you have no real locations you run out of work quick, they cant compete in a market thats not volume and insurance cash fueled.

Yes it is kind of weird to refer them as competition. When the meat has rotted in the sun for too many days, for a while the stars align and we do indeed briefly become competition.

Perhaps it is the definition..... Any person or entity which is a rival against another. In business, a company in the same industry or a similar industry which offers a similar product or service. The presence of one or more competitors can reduce the prices of goods and services as the companies attempt to gain a larger market share. Competition also requires companies to become more efficient in order to reduce costs. Fast-food restaurants McDonald's and Burger King are competitors, as are Coca-Cola and Pepsi, and Wal-Mart and Target. Come by and see me in Arlington. Cooper St south Home Depot

Yes ive never run my company on the belief that $500.00 was good profit on a roof job and ive met a lot of stormers that think that way.A lot of Texans think thats great as they dont have any insurance or real labor burdens.
